When I delete a file from the Finder while it's in icon view, it leaves a blank space in the grid. Then, the space stays. Is there a way to have the Finder automatically move my files so that the space is filled?
I don't understand what you mean. what do you currently have it arranged by? as i said if you set it to arrange by name it will automatically fill the missing space. this MUST be done from view menu->show view options. if you do it just from view menu->"arrange by" those settings WILL NOT stick.

yes. go to view menu->show view options and set it to arrange by something other than none like name or kind. then it will automatically readjust the icons when you delete one.
