Aperture 3 - Scandalous release

I have installed Aperture 3 update on 15000 photos aperture 2 library.
Crash systematically at startup
I finally found a workaround (to force 32 bits mode)
Run endlessly on face recognition
Stopped faces
Run endlessly on a mysterious background task labelled library processing (stuck on item 2 on 412)
Impossible to stop in spite of the command
Crash immediately when I try a simple action as opening a project

I installed A3 yesterday. I'm running a 32 bit iMac so that probably helped. The installation proceeded without any problems. Upgrading my library of about 100GB took about 30 minutes. So far, so good. The program has not crashed once. I've tried a few of the features (faces, geotag, Flicker) and they all work fine.

Sorry to hear so many of my fellow Apple users having problems. The development team clearly failed to do their homework on this one. Hopefully there will be some support for you guys soon. Stick with it because once you get it working, you'll be impressed.

I may have vented in the forum when I posted, I've been reading and using pretty much everything I could find in the forum to solve my issues. The last attempt I made was with a new install and new library of 250 pics imported from a Nikon D3, I could not export 28 clean pics to a folder on my desktop after trying for three hours.

My point is that it is an unnecessary exercise if a viable product was put into the marketplace. I use a program like this as a tool for my photography, much like my camera. If my camera was as unprepared for consumer use as this was, it would be returned within hours.

I buy software to manage things, it is what Aperture is at heart, a database manager. It doesn't work. Look at all the issues in this forum in the last few days. Would you be employed if you were responsible for something like this going to market?

Apple has rarely stumbled in the past few years. This was a pratfall.

My attitude is reflective of what I perceive as an arrogant attempt by Apple to foist an unfinished, rushed product on me

I have worked on this "upgrade" for almost two days now, and Aperture 3 crashes constantly. I did rebuild the library and start to bring in a fresh iPhoto import after reading the forums, but it spent about six hours on the import and then crashed again. I was having no problems with Aperture 2, but I had pretty much decided that iPhoto + PSE would suffice for my needs until I saw Aperture 3 and thought it would be the best solution. Now, I've just spent an hour uninstalling Aperture; I guess I'll figure out tomorrow what to do from here.

@Jim Coyne

Jim,

I didn't mean to be condescending. But you came here kicking and creaming, saying you were uninstalling and going to LR, and I don't really see where you expect to get with that attitude. My install went well only because I do regular maintenance and make sure I have my ducks in a row before I move forward. I have over 15 years experience in digital imaging, and I know a computer and its programming can only deal with what it expects to see. Unfortunately when it's released into the wild there are millions of unforseeable variables, and the designers can only work with constructive feedback. Attitudes like yours are useless.

Your Nikon is a totally different animal, and you can't compare it to Aperture. Your Nikon is a closed system, with no unforseeable variables. It works with its own lenses, flash, and only has to deal with files created by it (try loading a Canon RAW on the Nikons card and see how it handles it). The only variable it has is the memory card.

Aperture and other computer software has to deal with hundreds (or even millions) of files that something else created, and most likely afterward changed and possibly corrupted by you and other programs, and it has to do it on a machine with a changeable configuration, and it has to do it along side hundreds of other processes. No comparison.

Your iPhone is a bit more comparable, and I'm sure it crashes every so often (definitely on a x.0 firmware release).

So, you don't have to be a programmer, just ask for help and we'll all do our best to help you, and also don't forget to give Apple feedback so they can fix it. That's what they want to do. Believe it or not, they don't want to ruin your day.

BUT, you seem like you don't want to try, so what can we do? In the future, wait a few versions before you buy. I guarantee these bugs will be gone in a couple weeks.

I have just fininshed with the ape genius guy who has shed some light on the problem I have been having. Fundamentally the processing crashes start a d finish with the Faces processing. When turned off in preferences it has imported without crashing. Apparently this is a known issue and is particualrly prevelqnt when importing high def Images or upgrade the a2 libruay. If you go to support they will tell you to turn it off for now. No doubt until they have upgraded it on the next release.

DNG files add to the mix. So to save any further time wasting I suggest you forget about faces for now.

Cheers, hope this helps.

Scandalous -Agreed - Luckily for me I installed after doing readme's which requested 1gb for install OK. fine. Fortunately at startup A3 balked at trying to convert a 32gb A2 library despite having 15gb drive space free. No mention of this in the docs or readme's furnished. No window telling me how much space would be needed for the conversion process or how large the subsequent A3 library would be. Time capsuled back to A2.
Piece of crap as to documentation. I feel as if I just stepped back into the third party Microsoft world.
The threat no going back to A2 library once conversion has happened now has me really worried. Up until now I had always felt that if I did my prep work correctly, that there was not a problem being an early adopter of new Apple products. Those days are over.

Thanks for your info Kenneth. I tried your instructions and thought all was well but no, it still takes up all the computer and is stuck is processing photo 5672 out of 10000. Pictures look great but I cannot use it or safari more that 10 minutes before a freeze. anymore suggestions would be appreciated.

Changed it to 32 bit but no change.

Same problem here. After updating the Aperture 2 image database, it takes forever to open Aperture 3, and the spinning wheel turns on forever. Only solution is to force Aperture to quit (cmdaltesc). Even after deleting the prefs, this problem continues. I regret that I didn't go for Adobes software instead. If Apple don't solve this problem soon, I am very disappointed!

I have been working with A3 for 10 days, many hours a day. It was an update. Everything has been running almost perfectly. Sorry, but I don't know why.
The new Aperture is there, and in my opinion it's far far better than Lightroom ß y many aspects. If only I could speak a decent English! My main problem has been learning how manage the many possibilities Aperture 3 offers y every aspect.

Kenneth, I followed your procedure 2 more times and the third was a winner though still on the slow side. The last time I removed both 2 and 3 then reinstalled 3, made a new library and imported only my last 2 projects (about 900 photos). This was at the suggestion of Apple support rep. He said they hoped to come out soon with an update to solve our problems but for a while to limit the library size. At any rate when it works, it is a great program and the photos look fantastic. Thanks for everyone's help. It was quite a learning experience for this old codger.

After many weeks, I finally found the reason behind my problem with Aperture processing all the time. I discovered that a video clip from my iPhone had been transferred to Aperture and would never stop processing. After deleting this file completely, Aperture has behaved well. - If just Apple could have included a few words about this possible problem, I could have saved many days of frustrations and lost work!
