After downloading an avi file sent by my son of our grandaughter, a pop up window from QuickTime said I needed an XviD component in order to play it. After downloading the binary component, it says to drag the XviD_codec 1.0 alpha.component into Library/QuickTime. I could not find a QuickTime file in Library, so I created one then did as instructed. When I try to open the avi file I can only get sound, but no picture. What am I doing wrong?
I downloaded Perian Then Tried to open The AVI file in QuickTime with Perian and I could still only get sound with no picture. I spoke with our daughter who said she received and opened the file on her PC with out a problem.
First I opened the file in QuickTime, which resulted in sound only and no picture. Then I went to Finder and opened the file using Perian with QuickTime, which gave me the same result.
Yes Perian is in my Perference window.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
After reading your last post it dawned on me that I needed to drag the Xvid download into HD/Library/QuickTime then restart my computer and then was able to see the movie in QuickTime. Thank you very much for your help.
