Unable to list Firewire Devices?

A new problem after my last start up. I can't get any Firewire devices to mount. System Profile gave me this odd message:

Any idea what this is about?

8-Core 3.0GHz (late 2008), 16GB, 5TB, Nvidia 8800, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

They are WD drives, and so they do. Bear in mind that I said the problem is "like" a drive sleeping without the system knowing, I'm not sure if this is an accurate description of the problem.

I'm not sure if that could be the whole story anyway, since once communication drops out, connecting another drive (different cable, etc.) to the FW 800 port, even after a restart/shutdown+start, often doesn't work either.

There you go, then. Since your issue is different from the OP's, I strongly suggest starting your own thread. I have nothing further to add, except I disdain using WD externals.

Once the connection the the external drives is broken, the System Profiler reports that it is Unable to list FireWire devices.

...Exactly the OP's problem, and also the reason I posted here in the first place.
