Unable to list Firewire Devices?

A new problem after my last start up. I can't get any Firewire devices to mount. System Profile gave me this odd message:

User uploaded file

Any idea what this is about?

8-Core 3.0GHz (late 2008), 16GB, 5TB, Nvidia 8800, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

They are WD drives, and so they do. Bear in mind that I said the problem is "like" a drive sleeping without the system knowing, I'm not sure if this is an accurate description of the problem.

I'm not sure if that could be the whole story anyway, since once communication drops out, connecting another drive (different cable, etc.) to the FW 800 port, even after a restart/shutdown+start, often doesn't work either.
