mds repeatedly crashes, can't build Spotlight index

Hello,
I upgraded to Snow Leopard a few days ago and since then my machine is locked in an attempt to build the Spotlight index. First I thought this would just take a while and that I should be patient. But then I had a closer look at Console and found that mds repeatedly crashes and then starts all over again.

Below is an excerpt from the Console (I deleted some reoccurring messages to keep it short).
I started to notice the mds activity after I installed XCode 3.2.1 but that might be just a coincidence.

Also, out of curiousity, why is there an mdworker and an mdworker32 process?

Thanks much in advance for any insight,
schnapp

Could be a corrupted index file. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Spotlight issues.

The various mdimporters are stored in /Library/Spotlight/ and /Sytem/Library/Spotlight/. Step one would be to move those in the first folder onto a new Desktop folder, restart, and try the Terminal command *sudo mdutil -E /* again. If that doesn't fix it, put those back, move the ones in the second folder to the Desktop, and try again. Eventually, you'll find the mucked up one.

To conclude the story:
I went for the fresh install of Snow Leopard, but surprise - mds still crashes!
I then discovered this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2350328
- at least I'm not alone...

So for me it was back to 10.5.8 over the weekend.
Can't say I'm missing much - after all, Snow Leopard was "just" about improving the underlying technology of the system. You will understand that this sounds kinda ironic to me now....

because it was meant as an entirely subjective assessment of my situation after I wasted dozens of hours futilely trying to get a system running that promised nothing but a more polished foundation, yet failed exactly at that. I'm glad to hear that 99% are seeing no such issues, so please forgive my emotional outburst
