27" imac wifi problems (intermittant)

I really wish Apple had email or online support...

I have a 27" i5 imac that I bought just before Christmas, I had lots of problems with the wifi on it, it would not connect and when it did it was very slow, all while my macbook and iphone in the same room showed full signal and a fast rock solid connection. I rang Apple support, it took ages but they were very helpful and eventually we solved it and in the end it seemed to be WPA that was the problem and whilst I was not happy switching to WEP it seemed to work so I went with it.

Fast forward a month or so and I have started having problems again, it is fine when I boot but as the day goes on it gets slower and slower before finally refuses to connect at all. I am wondering if this could be something over-heating but in truth I am puzzled.

Anybody else having issues?

I am having the same exact problem. Bought a 27 inch iMac about a month ago, the wireless connection was a little slow off the bat, but then I was able to fix it. Recently after turning it on the signal is picked up fine for about 15 minutes and then all of a sudden the airport can no longer pick up any wireless network. Meanwhile my iPhone and MacBook have no issues. I called apple support and they had me complete a litany of useless diagnostic tasks - emptied my cache, did a hard reboot, repaired disk permissions , etc. None of it helped. Seems it's a hardware issue. Anyone know if this is a known issue with this model? I'm afraid the airport card itself may be defective in some way.

I have found a solution that has absolutely worked for me and hopefully will work for the rest of you. This was an excerpt from OSXdaily.com, which addressed the issue and presents a new solution that has solved all of my connectivity problems. Here is the routine:

Before proceeding, make sure you have done the following:

  • Be sure you are running the latest version of Mac OS X (get 10.7.2+)
  • Apply all available system and software updates available to your Mac from ïŁż Apple menu > Software Update
  • Reset the WiFi Router

After you’re positive you’re on the newest version of OS X and have all software updates applied to the Mac in question, proceed with the solution:

Add a New Network Location & Renew DHCP Lease

  • Launch “System Preferences” from the ïŁż Apple menu
  • Select the “Network” panel
  • Click on the “Location” pull down menu and choose “Edit Locations
”
  • Click on the + plus icon to add a new network location, give it a unique name, and click “Done”
  • Back at the Network panel with the newly created location selected, click on “Advanced” in the bottom right corner
  • Click on the “TCP/IP” tab
  • Click on “Renew DHCP Lease” and wait for the numbers on the left to repopulate, then click “OK”

Once you do this, all the issues should be resolved. This is actually an included fix in Apple's latest OSX update, but for some users their settings may override the fix. In that case, the DHCP lease renewal would not come into effect, making their connectivity spotty. Try this fix and let me know if it works for the rest of you, because it definitely helped me!

"Solution"!

One of my clients have had this problem since they bought a 27" iMac a half year ago. It's been a real PITA.

Last week they bought a new Airport Extreme Basestation. Since then all problems vanished. They had a two year old Time Capsule before.

I don't want to call this a solution, since I don't think you should be forced to buy a new router for your computer to work...

FWIW.

I have had my 27" iMac for about a year. Until about two weeks ago I never experienced any problems with the stability of my WiFi connection. It all started for me when I ran the most recent system updates. When I installed the update, I noticed it included a so called fix regarding WiFi. Before the update I did not have any problems. Since the update the WiFi does not stay connected for more than 15 min. I hate that there is no easy way to roll back updates on Mac. How short sighted.

Has any one had any success with contacting Apple support directly? What are the solutions they are proposing?

Here I am again. This is still happening to me.

I have a SHAW Cisco Broadband 50 router from over a month ago - I don't know if that is complicating things but it still seems to just be ME mostly and my 21" iMac bought new last summer.

Yes, it's still under warranty and I'll be getting Apple Care for the next two years but seriously .... does anyone really think Apple can help me over the phone? Or even if I take it in? Doesn't everyone here with a new iMac also have Apple Care or a warranty? So, has anyone taken your iMac to the shop under warranty and actually gotten the problem fixed?

I keep thinking it's just me until I come here to vent and see that it's still happening. It's maddening!

sigh...............

But I think it's also my router from Shaw because I'll Airplay songs to my Apple TV and they'll stop after a few - so that's not my iMac, it's the wifi. So maybe it's also Shaw ....

Maddening..............

Edit: I just realized that when I play RADIO stations on Apple TV I never have a problem with songs cutting out. So, wifi must be working for me to get the radio station, right? So, it really can't be Shaw because 99% of what I do with Apple TV involves listening to radio and having my screensaver running so I can view my photos. But today it was happening when I Airplayed the songs from my iMac to Apple TV. It's happened about 4 times so far in an hour. :E grrrrrrr

From what I understand, many of the supposed "fixes" and "solutions" are the product of Apple support and their so-called "geniuses". Here is the simplest diagnostic for all of you fellow sufferers out there: try a pc on your wifi. I predict it will give you the blazing speed you are paying for. While I appreciate the various workarounds people have offered here and elsewhere, Apple has clearly put a defective product into the marketplace which has caused significant financial damages. Think about the amount you invested in the iMac PLUS what you pay per month for broadband that you can't use. Based on the number of complaints I have seen on various boards, I am just surprised there is not a class action lawsuit addressing this problem already. I am going to start trying to identify some of the law firms that have brought suits concerning other issues. As much as I hate seeing the jackals of the class action bar get fed, this situation is clearly all kinds of wrong. Sadly, Apple seems to have no interest in fixing it, which I guess means they have reached the big time: shoddy quality is an accepted part of their business model. I wonder if too many resources have been diverted to iPads and iPhones, pushing laptop and desktop problems and quality to the back of the queue.

Just wanted to mention that I had a 2 month old 27inch iMac. I tried several suggestions to solve the wireless problems... called Apple and they mentioned it was probably interference. That was not the case, i brought it into Apple store only to find out directly that Apple has recognized a definite issue with the wireless connection, specifically with 27inch iMacs. They don't have an official fix at this time, there may potentially be an update soon to solve the problem.

Its very frustrating, but they were helpful and willing to negotiate in attempt to make up for the problem. It seems the only way to improve the connection is by getting the Apple router that is specifically made for the newer models.

I would suggest bringing your computer to Apple if you're experiencing the issue and work something out with them. And for those looking to purchase, I'd obviously stay away from the 27inch iMac for now, its a very annoying problem.

-I returned my 27inch today for another model that is not experiencing any issues.

Ok, I did a speed test on Shaw with my 21" iMac (10 months old) and instead of the 50 M d/l speed I'm supposed to get I got 12.36, 13. something - both tonight - and 10.something and 9.something this afternoon.

I just checked my old iMac (2007) right before the new one tonight and it got 44.61M d/l speed. They are both on the same wifi network and the same thing was running - Apple TV.

The ping is always 83 ms.

Just tested my iPad twice - 42 ms ping - 27.37 and 29.something - and 3M upload speed. Apple TV still running.

Tested new iMac again - 82 ms - 13.13 d/l - 2.64. My iPad is doing better than my iMac!

And here was me thinking it was Shaw!

Just bought my Apple Care Warranty for the next two years. I guess this thing is going to the shop. Right after I try the fix Shaw gave me tonight - changing the wireless modem. What have I got to lose!

Got an e-mail from Shaw with instructions on how to go to MANUAL and change channels instead of being on AUTO and wifi protected.

I tried many channels just because I was curious. My highest speed was 37.66M d/l. So I am satisfied with this for the time being. My old computer is getting a bit less but my husband uses it and he doesn't care!

I don't understand why my husband's iMac (the 2007 one) has a ping speed of 42 and mine is consistently 82/83. Is it because his iMac is closer to the router?

Anyway, the wifi has continued to go on and off all day long for weeks now so I'll see if this channel change does anything to stop that. If not, I'm taking it to the shop as soon as my Apple Care arrives.

I'd love to return this 21" iMac for a new 27" one - hahahahahaha. 😝 Don't know if they'll take it back and give me a new one when it's nearly 10 months old.

Oh well, whatever it takes, as long as it gets this wifi issue fixed.

I suggest that everyone who is still covered by Apple's original manufacturer warranty go to the site I listed below, enter the serial number of their machine, and fill out a support request. This is the fastest way to draw the people responsible (Apple) toward proposing a solution to the problem.

If you are not sure if you are still covered go to this site and enter your computers serial number:

If you get a response from Apple, please post their feedback here for the benefit of those who's warranty has expired.
