27" imac wifi problems (intermittant)

I really wish Apple had email or online support...

I have a 27" i5 imac that I bought just before Christmas, I had lots of problems with the wifi on it, it would not connect and when it did it was very slow, all while my macbook and iphone in the same room showed full signal and a fast rock solid connection. I rang Apple support, it took ages but they were very helpful and eventually we solved it and in the end it seemed to be WPA that was the problem and whilst I was not happy switching to WEP it seemed to work so I went with it.

Fast forward a month or so and I have started having problems again, it is fine when I boot but as the day goes on it gets slower and slower before finally refuses to connect at all. I am wondering if this could be something over-heating but in truth I am puzzled.

Anybody else having issues?

I am having the same exact problem. Bought a 27 inch iMac about a month ago, the wireless connection was a little slow off the bat, but then I was able to fix it. Recently after turning it on the signal is picked up fine for about 15 minutes and then all of a sudden the airport can no longer pick up any wireless network. Meanwhile my iPhone and MacBook have no issues. I called apple support and they had me complete a litany of useless diagnostic tasks - emptied my cache, did a hard reboot, repaired disk permissions , etc. None of it helped. Seems it's a hardware issue. Anyone know if this is a known issue with this model? I'm afraid the airport card itself may be defective in some way.

Hello,

Not sure if this has been touched on yet but just in case it hasn't I figured I would let you know.

I was having major problems with my 27in. iMac (cd timers running backwards, screen flickering, hard drives filling up for no apparent reason, and my optical drive was giving up the ghost).

I called the service line and they informed me that there was a recall on my hard drive (don't recall the name but it was a 1T factory installed). That said, they setup an appointment for me and replaced the drive, ran a full diagnostics, found an issue with the optical drive and replaced it, all for free!

They will replace the hard drive for free through April 1st. 2013 (not sure how they can justify not changing them after but....).

They also replaced the optical drive for free. Not sure if it matter but I am a business customer so that may have been the reason.

There seemed to be a disconnect between the info the store and AppleCare had access to because the store said the drive was not on their list (the opposite for AppleCare) but they were finding the same issues so they changed it. I just spoke with another friend who had the same experience.

I would give them a call and if nothing happens from there I would make a store appointment for the busiest time of the day. It is a good bet that they would prefer their customers hear that they are fixing the issue with your $3,000 machine rather than stuffing it off because it may be a bit out of warranty. I for one would not have purchased another $3,000 Mac had they not taken care of the issue.

I have this helps.

Be well.

Are there others like Spielo that don't have problems with connectivity while running Windows through Bootcamp? My wifi is flawless when running Windows, but drops constantly while running OS X. It also works perfectly at the genius bar while running OS X, naturally. I've tried changing channels and running "g" only. Still drops all the time.

LTrane, same here... When ever i'm running windows (i only use window to test Websites on other browsers or play the War-z) my connection is top notch. i never lose the signal.

On the other hand, i've notice that since i have putted the time machine to the off position. my wifi is not dropping anymore. Now, while at off it is still possible to make a backup by selecting "backup now".

then sometimes it drops and sometimes not.

isn't that BS!

In my previous posts I mentioned being on Shaw with a Broadband 50 giving me trouble, then switching to a different router and it was working ok, then we switched to Telus (big mistake) and now every time we turn on the microwave it shuts down my wifi until the microwave goes off. They have changed the router twice, still not fixed. Does anyone know where you change channels (or whatever) so I'm not on the same frequency as the microwave?

It does it to my ipad when I'm airplaying over to Apple TV, I finally had to plug in an ethernet cord on my iMac (although our daughter's pc does not have this problem and the iMac in the other room is not affected - just my iMac 21.5" mid-2011 model). It is utterly maddening!

We never had a problem with the same microwave while on Shaw. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention Telus.net has ancient e-mail which just s-u-c-k-s, they only allow 100 M of e-mail on the server ⚠ and the internet is slow. I hate it and will be changing as soon as I can.

Not sure about your particular router, but the process for changing channels is normally similar across brands.

You may need to refer to the router's brochure or search the web for some info on your router to find login details. Typically, in a web browser, type 192.168.1.1 (this you may need to check for your router, might be 192.168.0.1 or something else). Hopefully that'll take you to the router's configuration screen where you will need the user name and password for the router. It's often something like 'admin' for each field or 'admin' for user and 'password' for password (again something you'll need to check). Once you're in go to the wifi settings and the channel you're on should be shown and hopefully you'll be able to change the setting. Save the changes and exit.

Hi,

I bought a brand new 21,5 inch iMac (late 2012) and my wifi is deadslow! On my iPhone and iPad at the same location i have a connection between 20 and 24 Mbps and on my iMac i barely get to 2 Mbps. I called my provider, and they tested a lot of things, nothing helped, i've put my router on 802.11n protocol, this also didn't do anything? I really don't understand, that apple doesn't confirm this serious problem!! I mean, come on, this is a 28 pages long post, everyone has the same problem! Apple care centre calls me today, to discuss the problem, what will they say...?

Thijs

Some days ago, I purchased an iMac 27", those so slim, I love it, but I have 2 problems:

- I used the migration assistant from my MacBook Pro to transfer data and apps (as iWeb I'm using it and its not comming with new Macs) but my mistake was to copy the user account of my MacBook Pro to my new iMac, then i deleted the account from the settings and unmarking the option of save delete, to completeley delete all the data related to that account, and I' think after doing this, my wi-fi connection become to be sooooo slow, but the wired internet connection with RJ45 cable works completely fine, at maximum speed.

- I tried everything I've seen in google to fix the slow wifi in a Mac, using the ipfw commands in terminal, changing the MTU to manual with a LOT of cases (1453, 1470, etc), upgrading my Wifi access point firmware (D-Link DWL-G700AP), activating DHCP in the access point, changing security of the access point from WEB to WPA2-PSK, changing the channel from 6 to 1 or 11 of my wifi access point, deactivating firewall in the iMac, moving away the wifi access point (actually is at 4cm behind the imac) and anything fixed the slow wifi connection, when my old PC HP TouchSmart 600 works pretty good with wifi, at maximum speed.

So I decided to format the new iMac and start from zero thinking the problem was to transfer the system account from my MacBook Pro to the new iMac, and now, its no way to download the mountain lion .dmg from the appstore and create a usb, so I have to use my SLOW coneccion (4mb) to download the entire OS, that way I have to download from the cmd + R to download it, so I need to be more than 5 hours WITHOUT using my iMac, and the worst thing is that i could not access to the disk utility to format the HDD, so when I returned to the re-installed mountain lion, I saw everything was the same, same screensaver, same data in my disk, same apps...

So, how its supposed Apple let us do a completeley format and reinstall mountain lion from zero without a dmg of our OS?

Have the same issue here 27" imac. Took it to the Apple store and they just said they needed to delete a file that contains info about all wireless networks I've connected to and that will most likely fix the issue...well I still have it! I've only started experiencing this issue for the last 6 months..upgraded to Moutnain Lion, changed routers 3 times, changed all kinds of settings on the router hoping it will solve the problem but no luck. It's sad to see a company as great as Apple just completely ignore that this issue exists.

I've got a similar issue with my late 2012 27 inch. I use iStats to monitor the performance of my iMac and when I check my upload/download speed I often watch as it randomly goes from a nice steady speed to 0kb/s for several seconds and then back up to normal again.

Like most of you, my other apple devices such as laptop and iphone have no connection issues.

Along with this problem, my iMac also suffers from a static crackle noise that many others have also reported. I am reluctant to have something done about it as I will likely be without a machine for a month as they try to figure out whats wrong and dont find anything wrong week after week - and I can't afford that because of work etc. I know this because my 2011 iMac failed a couple of months ago and this new machine is the replacement.

I think it's time something is done. These machines aren't working as they should and we are entitled to a fix. What the fix is I don't know. I doubt a new machine will change anything since they are still selling faulty iMacs with issues that were first reported 6 months ago. What are our options?

There is a problem that stems from a combination of the OS updates and the airport wireless internal adapter. Hundreds of pages of threads regarding this problem. I had tried many of them for months. Then I got the idea to bypass the internal airport wireless and use a wireless ethernet adapter (usb has now reported to work as well). I connect to the router through the external adapter and shut off the airport adapter. PROBLEM FIXED. NO RESTARTS AND NO DROPPED WIFI.

I went through Apple support and they had me do dozens of things that never wound up working. This has been a permanent fix. Hope this helps you.

The problem is not Wi-fi. I am also having the same problem. I connected it directly to the ethernet and still doesnt work.

If the problem was just wi-fi, then ethernet or direct connection should have worked, but it didnt. So i think the Wi-fi works, but the hardware that is suppose to connect the iMac to the internet, being it wireless or ethernet doesn't work. IT IS FAULTY! I am not a computer geek so not sure how to explain myself but i think it is that card which connects the Mac to the internet, something like INTERNET CARD?

People, the problem is not WIRELESS, LET ME SHOUT IT OUT FOR EMPHASIS, THE-PROBLEM-C'EST-NE-PAS-WIRELESS!!!!!! IF YOU CONNECT IT DIRECTLY USING ETHERNET, SAME PROBLEM!

PLEASE WHEN PEOPLE TRY OUT SOMETHING AND IT WORKS, DO NOT POST THE SOLUTION HERE RIGHT AWAY, WAIT TILL YOUR NETWORK HOLDS FOR 1 MONTH BEFORE PUBLISHING IT HERE COS ALL THE SOLUTIONS DONT LAST EVEN FOR A DAY TILL THE PROBLEM IS BACK. THANK YOU!
