iCal EVENTS DUPLICATE and can't delete them

Events that I enter once are duplicating both on the same day and even onto other days! No matter what I do to try and delete the extras, they pop back within seconds! The duplicates also have random times, different from the original. I sync my iPhone and the events are duplicated there as well. Please help!

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Great, thanks andyvdp!

I had the following situation

- no Mobile me nor Icloud and 10.6.8 (you need Lion on your Mac too for Icloud and Freehand wouldn't work in Lion)

- did a restore from backup for the Iphone 4 (to get the Itunes sync work properly)

- Iphone went to Icloud sync without asking. Rermoved all Icloud sync, except "find my Iphone".

- Ical had doubled entries and data from old version backup. Ical in Mac had no such problems, only Iphone. No matter what couldn't get rid of them. "Replace data in Iphone" - no help; deleting all calendars in Iphone - no help.

* Deleting the ~/library/application support/SyncServices (and then making the sync choices in Itunes again) helped! I checked "Replace data in Iphone" for calendars. (Mail and calendars sync choices came visible after quitting those apps and opening again.)

Now I still need to find out why a lot of music tracks are missing in iphone: music sync doesn't work properly.

BTW, track order in playlists seem to become same as it is selcted in Itunes just before syncing. I had track order by genre and that was why there seemed to be no sense in the order in Iphone.
