How to remove echo and boost volume?

Echo and reverb are very, very difficult (if not impossible) to remove. The problem is that the frequencies of the echo are going to be the same frequencies as the original voice that you want to keep. By reducing the echo, you reduce the original voice as well.

You could try using a noise gate, but that often results in a very chopped off sounding track.

As for volume, that's fairly easy, just increase the gain of the track. But remember, you'll also be increasing the volume of any ambient or background noise in the audio as well.

In most instances, audio is much harder to "fix in post" than video. You best bet would be a reshoot with proper micing techniques or an ADR session.

Hello! My high school students uploaded an interview that when played in the camera did not have an echo effect, but once it was in final cut, the echo effect was there. The earlier post mentioned trying an ADR effect to possibly remove the echo effect. What's that? I am VERY new to Soundtrack Pro.

How new are you to the camera? It is quite likely you recorded both mics but only played back one in the field. Now that you've captured the footage, you can hear both mics in FCP. Just turn one of them off.

If Bogie's suggestion doesn't solve your issue, ADR means Automated Dialog Replacement. It is basically overdubbing the useless audio with a cleanly recorded version. While simple in concept, it is often tricky to execute.
