Software not communicating with ipod

So, now that I got one problem fixed another one pops up! I finally got through the installation process without a error message popping up, I get to itunes, and I get a message that says: The software required for communicating with the ipod is not installed correctly, please reinstall itunes to install the ipods software. I've installed and reinstalled the software about eight times now, and i think that the software should have been installed by now. Any hints? Can anyone help me?

That one's very rare nowadays. On modern versions of iTunes it usually indicates a snarlup in the access control lists (ACLs) on certain registry entries relating to the iPod Service.

The most recent time I saw this hitting someone, we got past it by applying the procedure from the following weblog entry:

[Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions|http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/solving-setup-err ors-by-using-the-subinacl-tool-to-repair-file-and-registry-permissions.aspx]

NB: when editing the reset.cmd file in Notepad (changing the YOURUSERNAME item), be sure that each of the nine lines of the script starts on a new line in Notepad. (If they get smooshed up together on a single line, the subinacl command won't work.)
