Screen sharing with Tiger

I have a small wireless network comprising a Snow Leopard 27" i7 iMac (the main machine), a G4 eMac and a G4 Tower Mac with the G4s running Tiger. A hardwired printer is attached to the eMac.

Sitting at the iMac I can see the desktops, users, etc. on the two G4 Tiger machines, I can navigate their contents and open documents, etc. etc and I can print.

Whenever I boot the iMac, which runs 24/7 so it isn't often, my Startup items automatically mount the G4 users.

And yet, when I try to share screens with either of them, it always returns the message:

+Authentication failed to "name" Please verify you have entered the correct name and password+

And no matter what combination of users names, passwords, swear words etc. I get the same message.

Now, in my ignorance, I would have thought that as I can log on and navigate those users I must have my name and passwords correct and that there are no firewall issues either.

So, am I:

1) misunderstanding everything;

2) attempting the impossible;

3) overlooking the obvious;

4) congenitally technophobic;

5) stupid;

6) in need of psychiatric help; or

7) a combination of any or all of the above?

What, mon tres bon amis, am I doing wrong?

And whilst I have (I hope) you attention, can anyone help with my so far unanswered iCal problem here:

Many thanks.

I can only tell you that I have an 27" iMac/i7 w/Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and I am able to use screen sharing to a PowerMac G5 w/Tiger 10.4.11

My Tiger PowerMac G5 System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall is disabled (not running, stopped).

System Preferences -> Sharing -> Services -> Apple Remote Desktop is running. The Access Privileges has everything checked. That is to say it allows me to do everything. Guest and VNC boxes are NOT checked.

I generally make my Screen sharing connection from my iMac using Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server -> vnc://powermac.g5.address

How is the speed of your screen sharing between leopard and tiger?

My is fine for basic things but I want to use it for more detailed work.

My setup:
G5 running 10.4.11 just for Vectorworks 9.5.3 (I do not want to upgrade VW to work with 10.6)
Newest Mini running 10.6
I will use the Mini for everything except VW.

Do you know how to optimize screen sharing for speed?

My above post, was to show it could work. My PowerMac G5 has its own pair of monitors and sits right next to my iMac. So I do not need to screen share between the two (I acutally use Teleport to share the iMac's keyboard and mouse with the PowerMac G5 Tiger system).

Now since the 2 systems are right next to each other, and connected with a gigabit ethernet switch, I get very good screen sharing performance, I just do not need to use it.

Now when I use screen sharing from my MacBook into work, my screen sharing is acceptable, but I do not like spending too much time working that way, as there is a moderate amount of lag due to networking bandwidth issues. That and squeezing a 27" iMac screen or a pair of 18" screens into my little 13" MacBook screen makes it a little cramped 🙂

I do not know of any performance options for Mac OS X screen sharing besides more bandwidth and making sure the CPU and memory of all systems involved are sufficient.

If I have to talk to a remote system over a very slow network connections, such as my Mom's system where there is only 768K bits/second DSL, I run the Vine Server on Mom's iMac and Chicken of the VNC on my MacBook with the colors set to 8 bit, which reduces the amount of data that needs to be shipped over the slow network. But of course the screen looks lousy, but it is more than good enough to do remote maintenance.
