Exchange Email - Cannot Get Mail, connection to server failed

I have a new iPhone 3GS, i can setup my exchange account through the iphone and the account comes back as verified, however i cannot get any mail. All i get is Cannot Get Mail, The connection to the server failed. I have tested my account settings on a Windows Mobile 6 device and it connects fine. Any ideas as this is now driving me crazy!!!!!!!

I am also having the same problem. I can connect to the exchange server no problems. Contacts and calendars sync okay backwards and forwards. I cannot get mail. It keeps coming up with Cannot get mail - user name or password are incorrect. The username and password are not incorrect - they are the same ones I use to login in with web access. Anybody out there got any ideas. It's getting a bit frustrating having to go into Safari and webmail everytime I want to check for emails.

I had similar issues with only 1 user's mailbox on our company Exchange 2003 server. We have at least 50 iphones/androids connecting through ActiveSync, but this one user (who had been sync'd to his mailbox for at least 3 months) all of the sudden could not to connect to server for Mail. We tried doing a factory restore on his iPhone 5 ios 6.1.4 and adding his account again. We were successfully able to add his mailbox with our standard settings, and Contacts/Notes/Calendar all functioned normally. But in the Mail app, it would say "Connecting..." for a few minutes then eventually pop up that it could not connect to server. After some digging on the Exchange server side, we could see that ActiveSync was able to complete the 1st request to sync the Mailbox folders, but would get 500 error when it tried to sync the Inbox.

For you Exchange admins, you may see Event ID 3007 in the System events, or Error 500 in the logfiles. In our case, the user had over 100,000 message items in his inbox (the suggested amount is < 5000 items in inbox) so ActiveSync would timeout and also cause performance issues in our Exchange servers because it kept trying to connect due to the high message count. This can also occur if there is corruption in the user's mailbox or if there is a corrupted mail item in the inbox.

After moving most mail into other subfolders, the user's mail began to sync with the iPhone normally again.

I just experience the same problem. All of the sudden without making any changes I got the error message on my iPhone5 "Cannot Get Mail - The connection to the server failed." This was strange because I was still getting email on my Outlook and on my "webmail" I was still able to get emails.

Basically it was a really simple fix. Instead of calling up a carrier rep and then getting connected with an Apple "expert", deleting the account, resetting network settings, turning off the phone, turning on the phone, etc.... try this:

Delete a bunch of emails from your webmail (the way you access mail from the internet when you are not on your office computer) around the time that your emails stopped coming through to your phone. This immediately fixed the push problem for me. There was a message on the exchange server that my iPhone simply didn't like.

Just got a new iPhone yesterday, and started having this problem. I had 10 "phone partnerships" (it's an Outlook thing) out of the maximum allowed 10 partnerships.

After you reach the maximum, you can't create additional partnerships until you delete existing ones from your account.

To do so, sign in to Outlook Web App, click Options > Phone > Mobile Phones, and delete any unused partnerships.

Hope this helps someone! 🙂

Occasionally, the iPhone needs to restart to fix minor software hiccups, just like a traditional computer. Turn off the iPhone by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button on the top of the device until the red slider appears. Slide the button to turn the phone off. Press the button again to turn the phone on after about 30 seconds. If this doesn't help, perform a hard reset by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. You will lose some settings, such as your Internet browsing history.

I just began experiencing "connection to server failure" on my iPad 2 Mail (for Yahoo) None of this occurred on my iPhone for either Yahoo or Gmail. What corrected the problem for me was, going into Settings, then Mail,Contacts,Calendars, deleting my Yahoo account then immediately restoring it without changing any of the previous info. (E-mail address, name, and password). I have no idea why the problem occurred in the first place or why the above actions fixed the problem. Anyway, it may be worth trying. For awhile I was dreading the potential hassles to fix the problem. Good luck and take care.
