Hello, Hazem Malek,
thanks for your advice, it solved my problem of empty mails, and a completely unresponsive mail program.
Thomas
Dear Hazem,
Thanks a lot for your advice. Using Mavericks I deleted the following files:
- Envelope index
- Envelope index-wal
- Envelope index-shm
They actually resided in ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Now I also got rid of another nasty bug: Although I had no marked E-mails Mail always indicated 3 of them.
BR,
Hamit
Hi
I was having the same problem:mail dispalyed in the Inbox but not in ONE of my mailboxes. The remainer were displaying OK.
I created a new sub folder and copied all the mail into that and Bingo the detail reappeared.
Good luck

I had a similar problem. The contents of my mail messages disappeared but I didn't have any of the other symptoms listed in this forum. I sort of stumbled on the problem. It was all happening in two of my mailboxes that both started with a ~
Once I took that character away, bingo, all the messages appeared again. Strange and frustrating that I didn't try that earlier!!!
Interesting ;not really!-my corrupted folder began with an A..too.
Hopefully thats the end of it.
Just did what this user suggested to resolve this infuriating problem and it worked for me too!! So hope that Apple get their heads round this. Too crazy for words.
I have exactly this problem and no, quitting and reopening doesn't help. I'm trying to figure out the other fixes from others such as moving the data from the -2 folders, but still having all sorts of dramas accessing old saved mail. New mail seems fine. EXTREMELY frustrating as I've wasted hours on this and still not fixed.

did you try Hazem Malek's advice? I'm not sure whether these problems are only caused by one identical cause only, but it seems that rebuilding the directory by eliminating the old fiels helps. It might be good if you try it and report back - that might allow to single out other reasons/solutions. Thanks!

I found another solution (must be my previous Windows experience):
I located the mbox file with the emails Mail didn't recognize (with the -2 added), I renamed it, imported it to Mail, and moved the files from the imported folder to the folder I wanted (and where they were originally). I did not delete the renamed mbox file just in case, although perhaps you can after the emails are imported to the proper mbox file.
Look in Mail Help: ReIndex messages. This has happened to me several times and I try Rebuild Mailboxes first; then ReIndex (you have to throw away the "Envelope Index" files in V2/MailData)
Hello!
New to this...love my IMAC but just recently tried looking at old messages (conversations) I've had in my email, and everything that I sent to people is blank. How can I see those again?
Thanks!

Hello there,
Same problem, unresolved by the proposed fixes in this thread. See details below. Would love a tip from people cleverer than me:
Most effective was deleting all "envelope"-containing files in the maildata directory. This worked for a few hours, and all 5000 emails were back in their places.
Then when I returned to my machine next day, the original all-blank mailboxes was back.
I have tried restoring from my Time machine back ups (I have plenty), and the mailboxes fill up then empty again next time I log in. I can identify the date of things going south as February 21.
I have tried rebuilding, but that seems to do nothing.
Is there a uninstall and reinstall option with Mail that will clean up whatever corruption I have?
