audio files have an AAC extension???

Hello,

I have audio files on a hard drive with the extension AAC. These are from my music CD collection and I copied a long time ago on before I had iTunes (I cannot recall the program used).

I tried importing them to iTunes, but nothing happens.

Anybody have any ideas how I can get these into iTunes?

The CD's are packed away in the attic and I'd rather avoid rooting them out to import them all over again.

Am I right in saying that AAC shouldn't even be a file extension? Anybody know how I made the files that way?

I'm confused.

PS The only audio converters that are free will not convert the files to M4A. I cannot afford even the cheapest sound converters that will.

Try changing the extension to .m4a

Get a copy of the free Media Info Mac and see if there's something unusual about the file encodng.

It says Audio Codecs Used = AAC LC
File Format = ADTS
Codec = AAC

Does this give the answer?

iTunes, to the best of my knowledge, does not support AAC in ADTS (Audio Data Transport Stream), only AAC in MPEG-4. You'll need to find a converter to get these files into MPEG-4 before iTunes will be able to read them. Sorry, I can't offer any suggestions as to a converter to try.

You can try Max. I know it can write ADTS (or it could at one time, anyway), but I don't know if it can read ADTS. Worth a try, though, if you haven't already.

I tried Max,. I could add the files to the list for conversion but it wouldn't convert them.

Bummer. Can't offer any other suggestions, I'm afraid. If you have access to a Windows system, you could look for a Windows-based solution.

Good thought about ffmpegx, Limnos. I looked at the list of supported formats for ffmpeg and it does list ADTS as a supported format for both decoding and encoding, so Neddy, give that one a try:

It's a bit old but it should still run.

ffmpegx will convert them, but when played back in iTunes the are in a "slow playback" made and voices are distorted.

Will they play in VLC? VLC isn't really a conversion tool but if they will play you could try streaming them to a mp4 file through VLC's capturing feature.

Hello,

I had tried that in the first hour of trying to solve this with no luck - because I was doing it wrong!!!

I went back to it in desperation later and will a little thinking got right.

Although it is not ideal because it is slow and converting them to mpg files so I'll have convert them again in iTunes - but at least they'll be in iTunes.

Was good to finally figure it out, but was also annoyed and needed a break so I shut off the MAC and treated myself to a bit of CASINO ROYALE and ONG-BAK.
