Roaming desktop icons
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help.

I'm not proposing a solution. This also happens to me every once in a while. I'm guessing the people most bothered are those who have many folders on their Desktop, or who have their Desktop full. They should know that this eats up system resources and will slow things down. Each of those folders is making demands on WindowServer. So, it is best not to keep many on the Desktop, in the first place.
I consolidate folders or items I don't need to see right away in a larger one I've called, "Clean Desktop." I have other "Misc" folders into which I place things. That way, I have no more than about ten folders, each with a different overall purpose, on the Desktop at any given time. If, on startup or log in, they all line up at the right of the screen, it takes only a few seconds to put them back where they belong. This way, it's only a minor nuisance.

Not me, I keep less than a dozen items on my desktop. But it's still extremely annoying when I go to drag something from one folder into one on my desktop and the desktop folder is nowhere near where I had placed it originally.

Me, neither. I have about 20 items on my desktop. Mostly folders holding a few items that require my attention daily.
Guess it depends how often this happens. If it happened daily, every few days, or weekly, it would be a PITA. But, since, for me, it happens very infrequently, it's a minor nuisance. Still, the fewer the folders on the Desktop, the better it is for the system, and the less trouble it is to put them back in order when this does happen.
Would be nice if there were a real fix for this, but I don't see that happening.
justmealison: FWIW, try temporarily, at least, consolidating those folders just to see if that has an effect on speed. I would think 20 might be a bit overloaded.

Happens 3 to 5 times a week for me, but with no consistency at all... today everything fired up normally and icons are all where I left them last night. Yesterday they were messed up, and probably will be again tomorrow. Really annoying.
Wow, that is a big PITA. Don't know if this has been suggested before in this thread, and if so, whether it worked or not. But try deleting the Desktop .DS_store file, which may be corrupt. These files are responsible for storing view options. Creating a new one might help.
They are normally invisible, so you will first have to make all invisible folders and files visible. You could do this using TinkerTool, but it's really quite easy using Terminal in Applications>Utilities.
Open Terminal and just copy/paste this command in. Then hit return.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
Next, to make this work, you need to restart the Finder. Copy/paste and hit return.
killall Finder
You will now see a .DS_store file on the Desktop. (They're all over the place, there are ones for every folder. This one is for your Desktop folder.) Just move it to the Trash. It will be recreated as soon as you do anything with the Desktop. You will need to restore your Desktop view settings.
------------------------------
To revert to the default of NOT showing hidden files:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
Restart Finder also required to take effect. Same as before.
killall Finder
When finished, just close the Terminal window.
EDIT: looks like this was tried and at least for the OP and a few others it didn't work. Look at the very beginning of this thread. But I see it did work for someone and it might work for you. There is a more direct way of doing this, but you must be very careful to copy/paste the command and not try to type it in. For that, see Thomas Reed's post right at the beginning of the thread.
Now that I'm reading the thread through, I'm seeing this suggestion, which is being confirmed by several as a workaround. Not a real fix but seems it will make life easier.
Deleting the .DS_Store file has been suggested as a solution, but users have noticed that it helps only for a few days or so, then the problem invariably returns.
Also, Desktop Icon Manager is at best a workaround of sorts, but in no way a solution to the problem.
Oddly enough, the problem seems to have disappeared on my iMac. It had never occurred on my MacBook Air. However, it still occurs frequently on my Power Mac. I'm at a loss here.
This is a bug in the operating system IMO. If it were something that occurrs regularly or during a specific set of circumstances it might be a traceable problem, but it's just flat out a bug in the OS. I don't believe anything will permanently fix it except for Apple to correct the bug and update the OS.
I updated to 10.7.2 yesterday and this morning on startup icons were fine. Maybe they already fixed this. Only time will tell.
No, it hasn't been fixed in 10.7.2. I updated yesterday and had to use DIM twice today.
I still suspect that it's caused by some third-party software, otherwise it should appear on all my Macs.
Is anybody here by any chance using VMware Fusion?

Bummer. It's not VMware fusion, I've never used that program and have had the roaming icons ever since installing Lion.

Anyone can create a developer account.
No VMWare Fusion here either, + since 10.6.6. Fan of DIM.
