0x80070005 error w/ Windows XP SP2

I am trying to upgrade XP to Windows 7 Home. Setup launches and I get the 0x80070005 error code. Apple addresses this problem relative to Vista, but not XP. The Apple-Win 7 upgrade utility does not work with XP, only Vista. Any suggestions?

Secondary problem; I tried to install the SP3 update, but the installation hangs. Any thoughts on this?

Key, in the case of one person I helped with this problem, was changing a line in the registry. Save this for future reference:

-Open RegEdit.exe
-Navigate to the following section
"HKEY LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
-Add a new string value called "Bootdir"
-Assign it the value "C:\:

Reboot. After that, the SP3 install program should work fine (depending on what sort error/behavior it exhibits when it's hanging).
