Photoshop wont start up

As of yesterday, Photoshop CS wont open for me. It will attempt to open, but I get a message that reads The application Photoshop quit unexpectedly. I have a HP F2120 All-In-One and have recently started scanning photos to my desktop. I dont know if the two applications are effecting each other. At one point there was a message that suggested resetting the defaults in Photoshop. How can I reset the defaults if I can't open Photoshop? Any help in getting Photoshop to open would be greatly appreciated.

HI,

Try booting in Safe Mode

Safe Mode deletes font caches which may help. It can take a few minutes to boot into Safe Mode compared to a normal boot. Once you are in Safe Mode go to the Apple Menu and click Restart.

What is Safe Mode

Also, your forum profile indicates you are running 10.4.3. If this is the case updating your system software may help also. Go to the Apple Menu/Software Updates.

And try repairing disk permissions.

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Ok... matter of deduction.

As I mentioned before: *Also, your forum profile indicates you are running 10.4.3. If this is the case updating your system software may help also. Go to the Apple Menu/Software Updates.*

You need to be running 10.4.11. Can you update your system software???

If you have a TWAIN driver installed for the HP to scan directly into PS, try reinstalling that software. If you don't have the disc, try the HP site for downloads.

I agree with BDAqua regarding saving files to the Desktop. Read the post here by: Klaus1

I cleaned up my desktop. I reinstalled the printer software. It didn't help. I found 2 updates and started to download them. I have dial up so it will hours to download them both. Will have to try again some other time.

When Photoshop attempts to start up, the last thing it says is being started up is Building TWAIN menu items. I don't know if this helps.

Thank you so far for your help. I am going to have to give up for the night and try again tomarrow.

What you need to do is find out from the printer company is where they store their scanner drivers. That would appear to be conflicting with where Photoshop is doing it. You also need to find out from Adobe where their TWAIN drivers are stored. TWAIN is the standard for scanning that Photoshop normally uses. It is possible that the scanner drivers you have for one aren't designed for your operating system, and are designed for something newer.

I tried holding option cammand and shift as Photoshop opened. It did ask if I wanted to delete the file settings. I clicked yes, but Photoshop still didn't open.

I then did a search for TWAIN for both Photoshop and HP. I clicked on a Photoshop TWAIN, I think it was the main folder for Photoshop TWAIN, and Photoshop opened. I have also been able to now open it from the icon on my desktop. The problem may occur again after I do some more scanning, but at least I know how to get Photoshop to open.

Thank you to everyone for your help!

Thanks, Carolyn and BDAqua--I've cleaned up my 2 primary desktops and followed the links to Adobe's "latest" fix since the 8.2.1 security update. The first fix worked from 27 January 'til, I'm guessing, yesterday (was away from computer since last Friday) when I tried to open an InDesign file and the serial number request window confronted me again.
So, I've followed the Adobe 2nd "go" and restored InDesign to my business desktop--the more important one--but can't access CS2 on my home-related desktop. If the corrected file is on the HD in the library as specified, shouldn't the fix work on all desktops?
I'll check back later.
