How do you disable/turn off Faces???

There is no way to turn it off - just let it finish the initial scan and you probably will not ever notice it again

This *****.. When I look through my photos, iPhoto makes small versions of all the faces it scans, so now I have a bunch more file to deal with.. Is there anyway to at least hide the low res faces it creates in the main iPhoto library?

There is never a reason to see those small faces - there is no reason to ever go into your iPhoto library and there are no user serviceable parts in it - any activity within the iPhoto library risks corruption of the library and data loss

click here for a discussion of proper and safe access to your photos - none of the many methods include going inside the library and seeing the Faces files.

Unfortunately it does not address the OP's question of how to eliminate faces - which you can not do

In the case of my imac G5, this process was really heating up the temperature until near by 90 degree celsius. I want this process to stop work but I don't know how. Furthermore, Apple said that providing a frequent face recognition tag will make the face process much smarter but, this is not work for me. The face recognition was still can not recognize my face smartly.

I think that it's a bit simplistic to say "there is never a reason to see those small faces" and "there is no reason to ever go into your iPhoto library".

For example, today I wanted to upload some pictures to Facebook. I did not want face recognition. When I used the Facebook uploader, I used the "Pictures" link on Finder to navigate to the Event in iPhoto - and there were all the Faces I didn't want to upload!

Did I do something wrong? Is this Facebook's problem?

No it's not. There is no reason to see them, there is no reason to ever go into your iPhoto Library via the Finder.

Well that's not how you do it.

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:

*For Users of 10.5 and later*

You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.



(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)


You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:



*For users of 10.4 and later* ...

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:

To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.

This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail

If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.

If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.

*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:

For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.

For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser

Other options include:

1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.

2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.

3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

I just started a new iPhoto Library. It has a mere 288 images stored in it. I have no faces tagged (as I don't shoot people.) Every time I open iPhoto I have to wait two to four minutes for Faces to do its nothing.

Since I'm on a MacBook Air I can do nothing while Faces spins the wheels. The MacBook Air just doesn’t have enough power to run Faces even when there are no faces.

Apple should add a "Disable Faces" pref. as they have done with GeoLocation— Look up places: Never

Do you remember the Terms of Use at all? You agreed to them when you signed up and there's a link to them on the right hand side of every page. As they explain, this is a forum for Users to discuss technical issues with other Users. Apple's developers aren’t here. They don’t promise to read anything here.

iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback is the route for feature requests.

That said:

Shouldn’t happen. I never see that icon unless I add photos. Sounds lie minor db crruption. Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

Yeah, sure. I memorized them.

Apple developers should be writing code not forums replies.
But they’re fools if they don't read what the users have to say.
