21.5' iMac fan speed is to fast

Hi all,

I've got a problem with my new 21.5' iMac. According to iStat the hard drive fan is spinning way to fast. Now this has been happening at least once every 8-9 days since I got this machine about 4 weeks ago. I've been searching this forum and the net to find a solution and there doesn't seem to be any. When I called Apple last week the CSR told me that when I'm not using the comp I should shut it down. I'm sorry but that's not the solution. Has anyone heard if Apple is going to fix this issue?

Wow! As I'm typing this the fan is now increasing in fan speed. Under iStat it's saying that it's the hard drive fan that's the issue. It went from 1099rpm and it's continuing to climb in speed. It's now over 4800rpm and still climbing. In the past I've never been at the comp when it's started doing it. I did take it to a local Apple authorized repair shop and form 2 days they ran some tests and couldn't get the comps fan to reproduce the issue. The tech said he called Apple and they are not even saying there is a problem. he seems to think that at some point Apple will send a firmware update down to fix the issue. Now I've had my comp back from the repair shop for 8 days now and low and behold I had the fan problem right on schedule. What should I do? Should I call Apple again?

Thanks so much,
Chevy

Ciao Stefano,
XX0X
XX0X
ma tu il disco come lo guardi? Montato nel MAC e quindi a circuito stampato in su, oppure tenendolo in mano e quindi a circuito stampato in giù?
Altrimenti sarebbe:
X0XX
X0XX
I pin sono numerati non potresti dirmi a quali numeri li hai collegati? il nero a quale numero l'hai collegato? ed il grigio a quale numero?

Prima di fare qualche stupidata vorrei essere sicuro.

Ti ringrazio anticipatamente

Fabio

Hi all,
my Mac is October 2009 build,
just to update my earlier posts (in the 27'' fan thread) -
my hard drive fan would run up from normal speed of 1000rpm to a very noisy 5000+rpm overtime after switch on, within 10-20 minutes.
Had the hard disk replaced by Apple Store, plus firmware update (?).
Problem NOT fixed.

Solution:
I installed 'smcFanControl' app, downloaded free (donations invited).
That lets me adjust all 3 internal fans individually and save the various different settings under separate names.
Now I run the fans at a default setting of HDD fan=1200rpm, CPU fan=1100rpm and ODD fan=1000rpm. Silent operation and absolute steady fan speeds.
When its hot, or if I run graphics intensive apps, I select a 1500rpm speed (just audible fans) or 2000rpm (noticeable sound level but not annoying).

Hope this helps, as it is a quick solution with the added benefit of being able to cater for adverse operating conditions.
