lan Search Domain

It appears that the domain of my wireless router has become the search suffix on my client computer. When I look under Search Domains in my network setting "lan" is listed in grey and can't be removed. The story is that about 48 hours after a new LAN was put in for other computers on our wireless network, I became unable to access any sites on the internet. I think that my DNS cache may have lasted 48 hours after the LAN was setup, and once it expired, the router's domain name "lan" became the search suffix on my computer so when you try to connect to "brian" it looks for a computer called "brian.lan".

Not sure if this description makes much sense, but can anyone help me fix this problem? Thanks.
