How to recover data if logic board has died

This is the 2nd time in 5 years that the logic board died on my iMac. Will it be necessary to undergo a repair/replacement of the logic board in order for me to recover my data? I'm assuming yes.
Correct?

iMac G5 Flat panel 17 "; iBook G4 OS 4.11, Mac OS X (10.3.x), iMac 1st gen. 1.8 GHz; iBook 1.42 GHz

No, your data is not on your motherboard, it's on your hard drive. Assuming that the hard drive is healthy, all your data should be recoverable, either by removing the drive and putting it in an enclosure, then mounting it on any Mac, or you might be able to use Target Disk Mode if your computer can be started.

Thanks all. I think I compromised the data stored on my ext. HD while attempting to transfer to the G4 iBook. (I activated Time Machine which appears to have copied the G4 data onto the ext. HD; I can't find my original G5 data!) Therefore, I will have to wait until I purchase a new Mac and have the Apple store make the transfer of data from my G5 to the new machine. I'll then send the old G5 to "Spudnuty" for a re-birth in a classroom that could use it.
My last comment: I regret that I didn't better understand the TM app. Had I realized what would happen I'd never have activated it. I think I'll find another board to discuss TM further.

Hey Mr. Easy,

I can't find my original G5 data!

You can try and use Data Rescue 3. I've been able to retrieve data from hard drives that have had their directories erased using DR 2. It will work as long as the data you're looking for has not been overwritten.
