Importing from a Panasonic HDC TM700

I just got this Panasonic which is able to shoot video at 1080p 28Mbps. I know that this format is not AVCHD compliant, and currently not recognized by iMovie 09.
Does anyone know of a work around? The first step is getting the files imported into the Mac, and then the next would be to see if one of the converters could convert it to AIC, which I was hoping would work as they are .mts files.

I recently started using a Sony HXR-NX5U. Very nice camera.... anyways. I mistakingly only transfered the steam folders when I was done doing a shoot in Haiti. Now for most f my time there, I only have .MTS files to work with. I have tried PavTube and a bunch of other cheap programs that really do not work. I came across 'ClipWrap'. It seems to work very well with the 'rewrap' option, but I am getting smearing and stuttering with some clips. I also tried your auto workflow and it opens but closes immediately.

Can you help me out. Thanks

Under what situations do you get the smearing and stuttering? Does this happen after you rewrap and try to watch with Quicktime player? I find that to watch unedited .mov clips with the QuickTime player it is sometimes that way, but usually not with my finished, edited version. Also watching clips in the viewing window of iMovie is often jerky. I find Clipwrap to work well for me. And I don't have trouble when I watch these movies on my media player.

If you have access to windows you may try this to rebuild the file structure: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11531525#11531525

I didn't get clipwrap to work but this solution has helped me a lot. Especially since I run Windows under VMWare on my mac this is a convenient solution.

However, if imported video is stuttering, may it be that the resolution is too much for your hardware? In which case you will have similar problems as long as you use the same codec. For me, after I de-interlaced (removing half the lines) the movies are running smoothly.

First of all I would like to thank Alan for his useful workflow. I am using it regularly and there is nothing to complain about. As life is sometimes not easy I am facing an interesting issue. I do convert the 1080p50 footage into a 720p25 using mpeg streamclip and the Apple Intermediate Codec. Interesting wise the converted video is a bit brighter than the original one - using Quicktime X for verification. This happens as well using iMovie 09. The purpose of doing it is easy to explain. I am using Final Cut Express for editing and the described worklow fits into one of the standard sequence settings of FCE and makes rendering not necessary. I have done a lot of research using the www and it seems to be that this issue is related to the changed gamma value of 10.6 or the immplementation of the Apple Intermediate Code. Could one please confirm and is there a workaround?

Help would be much appreciated
Oliver

I am also close to buy the Pana HDC-TM700 because of the 50/60p, but not without a resolution to post process the recordings Mac-like with my Mac. I am very excited what I have read here so far to resolve the incompatibility issue. For me as a typical Mac user I have no sense for “command line inputs” (This is why I moved from MS-DOS 3.3 and Windows 286 to OS 7). I am happy to read about Automator Apps and already available programs. However I did not fully get the point what currently works with particular Alan’s efforts (and how it works) as well as commercially “clipwrap?”. I don’t mind to add some $50 for a suitable conversion software to a $1.000 camcorder. For all here mentioned solutions/approaches what are the impacts on OSes 10.4/5/6 and/or iMovie 6/7/8/9, . . . Physically: what Mac performance is required to play and edit such movies : 2Ghz Core2duo or Quad? (I own a 2GHz core2duo 24” white iMac with 10.4.11 and iMove6)

I would be happy if someone of the experts here can put together a kind of easy readable summary or a “how to” manual with the several option.

Big thanks in advance!
