Well, not much more to say. Still disappointing. No support for Sigma RAW files .x3f
And, yes I had reported this request to apple more than one time. Now updated to 10.6.3.
For what it's worth, I requested Sigma RAW support for Aperture as well, and I don't even have one! I played with some RAW samples (just amazing); maybe a DP2...
Got my DP1 in a sale for around 250$ new. Its worth every penny. But its not an action camera. Its sloooow. But great quality. So I cannot really understand why Apple is still not supporting its RAW files. I´m using Sigma Photo Pro for just the files. But its not an librarian only a browser and slow as well. 😟
Likely because the market share for Sigma is
very small and because the RAW format is much different than any other Bayer-based sensor. And because it's really going nowhere fast.
I think the Foveon sensor is pretty cool. It just has very little traction. Since we haven't seen Sigma support just yet and their market share has not increased, I have my doubts we will ever see it supported.
It's not that it's impossible to do. That's not the question.
The question is whether the effort to develop and support it is worth the effort. It's more work to support X3F than it is to support another Canon camera; that's for sure as the sensors are completely different. It looks like, to date, Apple has decided to dedicate resources to things other than Sigma support.
This is not an answer.
I think Sigma can help apple to support that sensor.
For me the DP series from SIGMA are so good camera. in fact they are slow. But you get a real camera without too much gadget on it. Just a camera "back to the roots"
An other option should be that Aperture could load the file and edditing will be done in sigma pro photo. But for that we need to have some automation made from apple 🙂
I can't speak for Apple; I don't know what the Aperture team's "answer" is other than there's no support now. Practically, I wouldn't expect it soon, if it's not there already. Maybe we'll all be pleasantly surprised.
That said, your current options are to use Sigma's software to convert the files to TIFF and then load them into Aperture, or to use Lightroom if you want a RAW workflow.
