10.6.3 Mouse keeps freezing and keyboard problems

So, I installed 10.6.3 using software update and was experiencing mouse freezing problems along with keyboard glitches (letters not typing, freezing). It seemed like it was mostly happening in Safari, but then I tried Chrome and the same problem.

Decided to reinstall using the combo update... same problem.

Anybody else having this problem. It's pretty intermittent. I managed to get through this post with no problems, and the mouse is still working.

The only way I get the mouse to move again is to shut the laptop, let it go to sleep, and then upon opening it up again, the mouse is functional. But, it's definitely happening only since 10.6.3.

There are 2 of us in our house with iMac's that are having this same problem since loading 10.6.3. There are 2 others in our house using Macbooks who are not having this problem. The iMacs freeze at intermittent times but 99 percent of the occurrences are when we on the internet, especially when in email or having gone from an email link to a website. I have used Safari and another browser, Opera, and they both freeze. One time I was in Word. Usually the keyboard and mouse just freeze with the pointer still movable, but I have also had a permanent spinning wheel and a complete black screen occur. I have emailed Apple but have not heard anything back from them.

Same problem here with my mouse since I updated to 10.6.3 (they were right on release notes, more stability!)
A small workaround to avoid reboot that I have found is to just close down the screen until the mac hibernates, and them open up again the screen and login (sometimes it does not work, so you must repeat the process).
The mouse start working again.

Dear All,

just an update.... last Saturday I did a full backup of my 10.6.2 installation... and then I applied the 10.6.4 combo update.
4 days are passed... and no more freezes 🙂

Anyway... in the Console logs I continue to see messages related to the trackpad (like this one: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::message - kIOUSBMessagePortHasBeenReset). But it doesn't seem to affect the usability of my system.

Let's keep the finger crossed 🙂

I did some tests on my macbook pro early 2008 during last weekend... just to understand if the mouse and keyboard freezes were caused by my fault... or an apple one...

Here is the first test:
1. deleted and recreated the partition of my mac
2. installed snow leopard
3. installed 10.6.3 v1.1 combo
4. in less than 5 minutes the trackpad and the keyboard started freezing (like before this test)

2nd test:
1. deleted and recreated the partition of my mac
2. installed snow leopard
3. installed 10.6.2 combo
4. restored my user profile from time machine
5. restored/reinstalled my applications from the backup disk
6. surfed on internet
7. downloaded/replied emails
.... and so on...
Finally my laptop is working without any problem 🙂

Anyway: THESE FREEZES ARE DUE TO AN APPLE BUG IN THE 10.6.3 UPDATE.
In the last week I tried everything:
- Reset PRAM
- Delete startup/login items
- Remove Global account preferences (~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist)
- Clear kernel caches
- replace AppleUSBMultitouch.kext with previous versions

All of these workarounds were not working on my machine... the only solution was to reinstall everything and stop to the 10.6.2 update.

Hope this helps 😉
