TrackPad Freezes Applications when two finger swiping down to scroll

I have been using this mac for over 7 months with no problems. I recently purchased the snow leopard install CD and installed the OS update on both of my macbooks.

The first install on the other macbook worked fine.

However, after the second install on the second macbook a problem occurred. Everytime I opened an application it seemed to crash. The time varied from application to application, and I could not figure out why they were crashing.

After awhile of testing I found that the applications only crashed when I used the two finger swipe to scroll down the page.

I have removed all extranious preference panes, and have installed the magic mouse update in hopes that this would solve my problem.

For now I am stuck using just the magic mouse, as any normal use of the trackpad involves scrolling down, and ends up crashing my application. Whether it be Coda, BBedit, PS or Firefox

Please help.. If you need any more information please let me know.

PS. I have been searching these forums for a couple weeks now and have not found a problem similar.

Well here's my story and I'm sticking to it. I called Apple Tech support and got the following answer. It worked, though it's a bit draconian--erase the hard drive and reinstall OSX 10.6.3.

Here's my background. The new iMac that I just purchased (appx April 3rd, 2010) came with Snow Leopard preinstalled. I bought the new iMac to replace a 3-4 year old iMac that had just crashed (with "regular" Leopard 10.5.something (whatever was the last available) as the OS). I had everything on the older iMac backed up on Time Machine. When I initialized the new 10.6.3 iMac I was given the option of restoring from Time Machine during the initial start-up. Wanting to get all my old files and apps onto the new iMac, I selected the restore option. After everything loaded, and I updated all the software via system preferences, I then installed the OEM OSX 10.6.3 software on the CD that came with the new iMac to upgrade the restored 10.5.something to 10.6.3. After all was said and done, everything worked great....except the Magic Mouse would only work as a one button "regular" mouse. That's when I posted my previous message.

I tried reinstalling the Magic Mouse drivers to no avail. I also tried reinstalling 10.6.3, again to no avail. When I called Apple Tech support the first-level tech was unable to troubleshoot for me, so he transferred me to one of the advanced techs. The second tech advised me that when I upgraded 10.5.x with 10.6.3, some of the 10.5.x components we're "left behind" and were interfering with Magic Mouse. The tech advised that the Magic Mouse only works with 10.6.3 Snow Leopard.

So...since I had all my data from my older iMac backed up on both Time Machine as well as a USB back-up drive (two back-ups, as I've previously had a Time Machine/Time Capsule crash and lost all my back-up!) and the only cost to erase and reinstall would be time and frustration but no loss of data, I chose to do so. Since erasing the hard drive and reinstalling 10.6.3, the Magic Mouse works as advertised. It's got some pretty cool features.

So....for me, problem solved.

I also had the "ERROR_VOLUME" message when trying to install the magic mouse software update. The second of your fixes worked for me.

When I tried the first one via terminal, I copied and pasted your command into the terminal window and was told that it wasn't valid, and perhaps I should be more careful when using the Sudo command.

Thanks so much. I really hope the next OS X update doesn't cause more problems.

Cheers,
Nick
