10.6.3 13" MacBook LCD backlight off after resume form sleep.

Hi all, 1st time poster, not had a problem with my Mac I couldnt solve until now....

I've updated to 10.6.3 using software updater. Since then when I resume from hibernate the LCD backlight of my MacBook does not turn back on. There is a very faint image on the screen, so I know its just the backlight. The F1 & F2 keys won't control the backlight in this state, I also noticed that when this happens F5 & F6 won't adjust the keyboard backlight either.

Things I've tried:
commented out my .sleep & .wakeup scripts
reset pram
Onyx
checked colour profiles
deleted com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

the problem persists. If it occurs again I'm going to try the 10.6.3 combo update. Has anyone else come across this?

trust tried it again. used Onyx to verify disk, clear caches etc. Ran 10.6.3 combo update in safe mode. 1st wake from hibernate = 0 backlight, sigh. yet again back to 10.6.2. I'll attach a system profile file to my bug report. So hopefully its not for naught.

For all of those having this problem, have you at any point had an external monitor attached to your macbook?

I have used the display port --> HDMI to connect to my home theater, but when I was having problems there was nothing attached. The problem started for me right after the update.

I used time machine and restored an earlier version of the backlight file mentioned in this thread, and when I rebooted I did the cmd-opt-P-R deal, and now it works.

I've just had my software updater let me know that a security update 2010-003 update is ready to be installed, did this help anyone with the backlight issue?

I've got everything work-related open at the moment (update requires a restart), but thought someone might want to try it out to see if it cures it.

Thanks,

This is the second problem that I've had with 10.6.3. The first involved not rebooting--it got stuck on the grey spinner. You can read about that here:

The second is this one. I have a 15" MBP (see below) and do not run Sleepwatcher.

Nor have I had an external monitor connected to the MBP since first installing 10.6.3. I have connected an external to it under Tiger (I skipped Leopard).

Actually, having said that it's just happened again (this was after the PRAM reset suggested elsewhere), and the workaround didn't work. Shutting the case to put the macbook back into deep sleep, then waking it up again worked this time.

Also noticed that the screen is lit while the wakeup progress bar is being filled in - the backlight only goes out AFTER the machine fully wakes up.

Very annoying.

Update on the PRam concept that did not really work for me after all.

I have also tried playing with turning on mirroring and activities like that before going into sleep mode and that works some times when hooked up to the DVI.

what I find when it does not work the system comes out of sleep with the display off and the CPU gets very hot, forcing me to reboot. I am pretty annoyed, given when at work I use the DVI.

I also noticed after this update my ATT usb option devices was flaky now too and making applications that us the network crash.

The comment about backlight set to zero made me think about something that might have caused the problem for me. Well, first, I should say that I have two sleep-related programs installed: Caffeine and Jiggler, neither of which is normally active nor was active when I encountered problems. The thing that I thought of though is related to a separate problem I encountered.

Apple is aware of this problem and ignored it, but it was a problem with all the Macbook Pros before the unibody design, where the latch is shody. You try to close the computer and it starts to go to sleep, then the sloppiness in the latch makes it think that you opened it up and it wakes up again. This is REALLY a problem if you try to move your MBP when it is closed and asleep. Frequently, I would pull my MBP out of my bag blazing hot with the fans running and battery nearly dead. In order to avoid this, Apple says that you have to turn the computer off to move it! (Not a solution.)

So, I found some instructions online that involved entering a sudo command into the terminal:

sudo pmset -a lidwake 0

I'm pretty sure that this setting would have been overwritten when I did the PRAM set. Would it have changed when I upgraded from 10.4 to 10.6? Answer=no. I ran a

pmset -g

and it told me the lidwake is still set for zero. More specifically:
Currently in use:
womp 1
sms 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
ttyskeepawake 1
acwake 0
sleep 15
autorestart 1
halfdim 1
hibernatemode 0
disksleep 10
displaysleep 5
lidwake 0

I still haven't reverted to 10.6.2 since I haven't synced/backed up my portable devices, so I changed the lidwake back to 1 except when it is running from the battery. I do care if my computer turns back on after I close it on my desk/bar, but as long as it is plugged in it is just wasting electricity and not negatively effecting my MBP (as it does when it goes psycho in my computer bag).

Any further thoughts?
