You have to use Clamshell Mode, connect an external monitor, keyboard and mouse then put it to sleep by closing the lid and wake it with a mouse movement or keyboard touch.

Another option is to use
InsomniaX, zemelb, if you are not hooking up to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Be aware, though, the leaving your computer running while closed can increase heat build up a little. The keyboard area is one through which a certain amount of heat escapes, and keeping it shut can increase temps a bit.
I thought I just couldn't find the selection in preferences that allows you to keep the machine running running when the lid is closed. It was DESIGNED to sleep with the top closes with no override?
How does one enter "Clamshell Mode"? Do you actually have to have both the keyboard and a monitor connected?
Its a safety feature really. Bunging the computer into a bag with the lid closed and the processor running (which would be very easy to do if an over-ride was available) can cause some very nasty overheating. Making it necessary to have the external connections helps to prevent this.
It is one reason why it is good to use third party add ons like Insomniax very cautiously.
I just got this computer today. I had the same problem until I realized that it only works if the laptop is plugged in. I plugged the laptop power in and closed the lid, the exteranl monitor goes black, then just move the mouse around and it will wake up.
