Will the iPhone chargers (AC and car chargers) work with the iPad?

The iPad is uses an extreme powerfull battery of 10 watts and proceser greater then the iPhone. In terms of the iPhone chargers, they will work, but if you sync the iPad to your laptop, if you own an old mac the ipad will not charge while pluged in. if you wish to gain the full battery of the iPad, then use the plug and conector that you recieved inside your iPad box to charge.

That's odd (and a bit frustrating). I just got off the phone with an Apple support rep and he said the charging accessories for the two devices should not be interchanged.

The iPad charger overview on the apple store site says "It also charges iPhone and all iPod models with a dock connector." Yet, I have a client who says he has fried two iPhones by plugging them into the iPad charger.

I'm not sure what to think...

There are some reports of iPhone batteries being killed by iPad chargers but these may be along the lines of "my sister heard from her friend that his cousin's iphone......."

I have found that my iPad does charge from my iPhone charger, albeit slowly. However there are some first hand reports on Macrumours of iPhone chargers dying after doing a long charge from a low percentage on an iPad.

I personally feel it might have been more sensible to have the iPhone and iPad chargers easier to differentiate than a barely legible sticker, in pale grey print, saying 10W. Why not mould the outer casing from a different colour plastic, say silver or black. You could then tell at a glance if it was an iPhone (white) or iPad (silver) charger. I have put a black line in indelible marker pen round my iPad chargers.

I think your client is confused. Why would he fry two? Why wouldn't he stop at one?
I charge my iphone almost daily with the ipad charger.

Will an ipod touch car charger work with the ipad for charging in the car?

Yes. It may charge slower than with the ipad wall charger, but iphone/ipod car chargers will charge ipads.

Look at the spec. _5 Volt is the critical number_, just like stated above. If the amps out is much less than about 1 amp, it may only charge a sleeping ipad, but it will charge it.

Amen! Not only should the charger bricks be readily identifiable, but so should the USB to Dock cords. I've got so many of the latter lying around from iPods, iPhones and, now, my iPad, that it raised this question in my melon: Does the cord itself make any difference, whether plugged into a Mac or the power brick? The only visible difference I find is the width of the Dock connector; I have some 3/8" wide (from the cord to the actual connector) and some 5/8" wide. I doubt it matters, but thought I'd ask...

It mainly has to do with the more power requirement of the iPad. All iPod and iPhone models draw up to 5 Watts of USA Power. The iPad draws 10 Watts of USA Power. Also the adapters may have a different handling of the wattage as they are specifically designed for the 5 Watts and not 10 Watts.

So you should use the iPad power accessories instead for the time being until third party ones come out in the coming month that specifically has "Designed for iPad" stamped on the box. One of the few reasons some of us like me are going to wait.

Sorry to dig up this old thread; I hope everyone is content that their 10w iPad charges will charge their iPhones and iPods just fine 😉 Just had to reply to this comment from the first page of this thread since the poster referenced "10w of US power"... which is a ridiculous statement to make!

1) Watts = Volts * Amps (In the case of the iPad charger, it actually outputs 10.2watts; 5.1v * 2amps)
2) "US Power" has absolutely nothing to do with anything here... All modern apple power supplies are switching and support 100-240V AC... Which they then convert to DC. In the case of these USB adapters, ~5v DC. 5V DC at 2amps = 10watts on the DC side... Which, ignoring losses due to AC rectification/conversion is... 10watts on the AC side too! if you're running the power supply on a nominal 110V "US" system, that 10watts draws ~91mA (Less than 0.1A) at 110V. On a 220V system, it 'only' uses 10/220 = ~45mA!
