Is there any way for iPod touch to have access to 3G Internet?

Basically want to be to surf net and use VoIP programs when out of home. Can iPod touch take advantage of 3G internet? Is there a peripheral that can have a 3G sim card plugged in to allow Internet access?

The only way that I am aware this is possible is to buy a MiFi router by Novotel. But battery life too short and it's a nuisance carrying around 2 devices. Would be great if there could be just a small peripheral that can have a 3G sim plugged into iPod touch to allow Internet alt all times!

Let me put my name also on that long list of people to actually sadly say, NO!

There is no way possible as of today that could make the iPod touch take the advantage of 3G network connectivity. I wish that some manufacturer of Ipod products were on the verge of making a sorta connect card(similar to the laptops 3G network antenna that connects to the USB ports) that could easily be plugged in on the dock connector to give you Internet anywhere you go. But that coming to reality, well let's me just say I wouldn't be holding breath that long. The only way possible is through a MiFi device, which again is not worth the money to pay for such expensive (monthly closely to $60 dollars)Data plans that doesn't include unlimited data like AT&T has.

To get your hopes just a little, there are some hearsay about the future generation of the iPod touch. It seems that apple sudden change of mind in putting 3G network on devices like the ipad for data use, we might be seeing sooner than we expect a similar approach to the iPod. That could prove helpful to a lot of folks like ourselves that would like to use voip programs(or just Browsing the Internet) while we are mobile. If that turns out to be true, let's hope there is no contract involve just pay-as-you-go kindda deal.

Um, yeah... I don't really see Apple doing that since that would cannibalize their iPhone sales. The iPad is special, since it's Apple iNetbookTabletMobileDataDeviceThingy... but the iPod is a iPod. Simple as that.

I could be wrong though, but I'm not holding my breath. 😉

I understand of what you are trying to say, but I disagree with that it take the sale away from an existing Iphone 3GS by selling an iPod touch with 3G connectivity. The Iphone and the iPod touch are always gonna be different even if apple adds 3G to the iPod touch devices. Both devices offers closely functionalities when it comes to features, a closer look at the hardware and software features of each device reveals them to be very different indeed. One has a camera, the other don't. One is meant to be a mobile phone, the other will never be one.

It's like saying that the Ipad(wifi model) product could cannabalize the sales of the smaller counterpart the iPod touch. This is simply not true: The iPad and iPod are completely different beasts when it comes to hardware, software, and what you can do on each device. The Ipad superior 9.7-inch display, has optimized apps to take advantage of the bigger screen. I experience a little bit with an ipad(over an apple store) it's a great device specially safari gains a makeover to look like its desktop sibling. And have you ever tried listening to music via your iPod external speakers? Music sounds weak and slightly tinny--definitely not ideal for an audiophile like me. I was pleasantly surprised by the iPad’s speakers, is a lot better than the iPod touch. Despite of those things,Will the iPad cannibalize sales of other Apple products? Nope, the iPad's size while convenient, won't exactly fit in your pocket. since you won't be jogging with your iPad to listen to music, or answering phone calls with it, I don't see sales of iPhones and iPods being affected much.

My conclusion: Regardless of what apple makes out of the iPod touch this upcoming fall, there are always gonna be consumers that will want different things out of their products--and on with different mind sets. Think of it this way: If apple adds 3G connectivity for data usage, people are always gonna need a phone to make calls and send text/MMS messages.

I disagree. There are several iPods: the Nano, the Shuffle, classic...and then there's the Touch. Each one has different properties; I would accept a Nano or classic as a gift but wouldn't buy one on my own. The Touch was the first iPod I actually bought, as it did more than just play music. I have a Creative Zen Jukebox, circa 2005 that was $100 less than the equivalent iPod at the time and I couldn't justify the money at the time. All I wanted was something to play music on a very long business trip I was taking. (Like five weeks on the road, driving from Oregon to Nashville, Windsor/Detroit, Chicago, Evansville...and points in between.)

Meantime...+I use my touch like an iPad.+ With the exception of the iBookstore, it does everything I ask of it. Beats the heck out of a Zune....

I just got an itouch the other day. I was trying to figure out a way to use my data card that I've had from alltel for about 2 years, for internet for the itouch. I was about to switch to qwest to get wifi in my home at least and was even looking into the mifi, which is exactly what I'm looking for. But my current data card plan is actually unlimited. I'm not ready to give that up as I do a lot of downloading and live streaming. Luckily I came across the cradlepoint router. I got it at best buy for $70. I just plug it in and it works. The only thing is I wish it was battery operated and easily portable, to take it everywhere. I am still hoping for a way to use my phones 3G connection for my itouch. Hope someone comes up with a solution some day.

In the US there is not currently a 3G device which you can plug your SIM card into and use with your iPod Touch, but you can get your iPod Touch connected to the cell data network. You can buy a Sprint or Verizon MiFi device to use their "3G" cell data network and share it out as a wifi hot spot. I believe you can even get one of these to work on the Sprint "4G" network in some areas.

The MiFi is nice, and using it with an iPod Touch is a good alternative to an iPhone if you really only want the data connection. My wife has a Verizon MiFi for work, and she uses it with her iPod Touch all the time. I know I had talked a co-worker into going this route about 6-8 months ago and he loves it too.
