iBooks crash?

I downloaded iBooks about three times now. The first time and second times that I opened it I was able to dowload books and start reading them. When I tried the last time to do that, it started crashing. When I open iBooks, I can see my virtual bookshelf but only for about a second then it crashes and the iPad reverts to its home screen. I have tried syncing again as well as deleting and reinstalling iBooks but nothing works.
I have had no other problems with the iPad at all. I can even type on it pretty well and am quickly getting faster at that.
Any suggestions?

I was having the same issue. I had a couple PDF apps installed on my iPad. Two of them were PDF Reader PRo and Zen Viewer HD.

I deleted Zen Viewer HD and I could then "open in" PDF Reader Pro (which wasn't showing before)

I then deleted PDF Reader Pro and "open in" iBooks appeared again and I could open PDFs from Safari.

I could also open iBooks and download samples of books from the store.

Hope that helps,

D.

Ok, my iBooks crashes also. I am not using iCloud (upgraded to iOS5 and iBooks2) . I have deleted all PDFs from iTunes Books library. I deleted the iBooks app. Reset the iPad1 (but did not Restore).

So, given all of that, there should be no PDFs anywhere. However, when I sync, it still finds the same 14 PDFs and copies them into iTunes. If I deleted the app, and it said that "all data will be deleted also" why do they keep coming back? I want to start with a "clean" iBooks app, then add one PDF to see if it will remain open.

All of this started with the upgrade to 5.0 and iBooks 2.0 - I strongly believe that this is Apple's way of forcing us to buy new hardware, i.e. iPad 2 or now the iPad3.

Any suggestions?

I'm a 56 year old granny who doesn't understand all of the ins and outs of computers ...

Like you, all of my problems began when I upgraded to IOS 5.1 and continued with IBooks 2 and ITunes 10.6 upgrades. Until then, I could sync pdf and download Epubs without any problems with IBooks. Now if I sync with ITunes, all of the transfers appear on IPAD with a black line through them ... free downloads and purchased books. It won't let me open them and the only way to delete is purge all of IPAD info.

Could this be related to DRM ... the new program updates are restricting the use of digital books?

I'm having the same problem too.

iBooks latest version on iPhone 4 -a few seconds after I launch the app & can see the ibooks library, the app crashes, closes & returns to the home screen. Total nightmare!

Can anyone help?

I've tried deleted superfluous PDFs and re-syncing but that doesn't work. Restarting the iPhone makes no difference. Now trying to delete the app and reinstall.

I'm having the same problem. It's only occurred the past few days so I assumed it was a new file that has been added. I have therefore deleted those files but to no avail.

As with others, the app launches, you see bare shelves for a few seconds and then it crashes.

Obviously this is extremely frustrating. Is there actually no solution to this?

@Temperamental – on here, no. this is a user to user forum and Apple doesn't usually participate. if i were you, and assuming that you have no unusual content (like epubs or pdfs not from iTunes or another reputable source, which they could blame it on) i would take your new iPad in to your nearest Apple Store to see a 'Genius' and i would demand they fix it for you.

I have the same problem here:

a. Tap iBooks.

b. It will open and show my collection of pdf.

c. Change to my books collection.

d. It will briefly show the empty shelf.

e. It will briefly show the books.

f. It will terminate and the iPad is back at the home screen.

This is the fix that worked for me:

1. Remember the last books added? If not look at step e. Unless you have re-arranged the books on the shelf the last books are on the top left.

2. Go to iTunes on your desktop computer and drag the last book you have added to the iTunes library to your desktop, so you do not lose it.

3. Delete the the last book you have added from the iTunes library. Right-click and choose delete and confirm.

4. Sync iTunes with your iPad.

5. Check on your iPad if problem a. through f. is still there.

6. Repeat 1. through 5. until problem is solved.

I had to remove three eubs and one pdf. The epubs were ok and are back on the iPad again. The .pdf was 126 MB with 6 pages, made in preview from large tiffs. The .pdf worked for a while but was slow in scrolling.

Bottom line: iBooks has an issue with large pdf files, that may not show the first time you open but may cause crashes later.

The only way to fix this problem is to email Tim Cook - Look at what happened with the last iBooks problem -

No one at Apple gives a F until the big boss says, "what is going on with this issue?" - Then the lazy engineers issue an update within a day.

And, watch how it is magically resolved in the next update.

Seriously, avoid these ridiculous workarounds. They only make things worse when an update is released.

The email is in the link.

Last time, 3 complaints did the trick. I've sent mine in.

The solution is that there is no solution. Give up ibooks and install a non-Apple app called Goodreader. You have to pay but it costs next to nothing. Pretty easy to install if you followed the instructions on their website. And hey presto you have an excellent view of pdf documents and photographs etc.

Apple thank you so much for for all the help you have given perplexed ibooks would-be users over several years. I know it is not your policy to respond on forums, but you would think you would have posted this information somewhere -- or fired the geek who currently designs ibooks and got someone in who can do a proper job.
