How did the photos get onto the iPad e.g. taken with the iPad, synced from iTunes ? Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view. Photos that were synced from your computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing.

The mere fact that there is so much discussion regards this feature (or lack of), that different methods are needed to remove photos depending on the source, and that you cannot remove photos when away from a computer, all show that this area needs some major work, just to make it *simple*, as things *should* be on Apple.

Its taken me some time to get rid of photos that came via an SD card, because I had to serach on the web (that *really* shoudnt be be necessary should it?) , and even then, there doesnt seem to be a 'delete import' function, I ended up having to select each photo first to delete it

I will add a suggestion via the link produced earlier BUT if anyone from Apple is reading this, hopefully something will be in the next update. It really shouldnt be necesasry to have to buy an application merely to do such a basic feature.

I have found the way to delete photos from the iPad. While taking pictures on a trip I download them to iPad and later want to get rid of them. The easy way to do this is to :

Click EVENTS

TAP LIGHTLY on the event you want to delete. That will open the group of photos.

Press the "forward/send to" button on the top right (looks like an arrow coming out of a box)

a list of options will appear at the top left of the iPad.

Tap on each photo you want tp remove, leaving a blue check mark.

Press the red DELETE button (top left) and they will alll be gone.

If you press too hard on a photo instead of using a light click you will have to use a different way to clean up your iPad. If you have brought the picture to full size, use the garbage can on the top right.

The first way is much faster!

I understand I have to delete my photos from my computer, and then re-synch my iPad with the photos left on my computer that I want to be on my iPad. I can, of course, do this, but what a pain! Have to burn all photos on a CD, except the ones I want on my iPad, then re-install the other photos back on my computer, either from my cd or my back up drive. If I didn't get this iPad as a gift, I wouldn't have bought it for myself. I mistakenly thought the iPad was more of a "computer" and instead it's more of a giant iPhone. I'm also not happy that if I want the iPad to do stuff I need to buy apps (yes, I know some are free). Oh well, I'll figure it out.

What?

You have to do no such thing.

Try creating a parent folder on your computer and place the named folders of photos that you want transferred to your iPad in the parent folder. Select the parent folder under the Photos tab for your iPad sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync. The named folders of photos in the parent folder will be transferred to your iPad as separate photo albums.

To add additional photos to your iPad, place the photos in one of the existing folders in the parent folder, or create a new folder for the new photos and place the folder in the parent folder followed by a sync. To remove an entire folder or album from your iPad, move the folder of photos outside of the parent folder followed by a sync.

Then it's obvious, you do NOT understand because that is not how you remove photos from the iPad.

Follow Allan's suggestions above. Very, very simple.

And if you are using a Mac and iPhoto, you cna just select the Albums, Events, Faces you want.

This discussion has Ben going on for 6 months. It is pretty obvious that there is a problem with no good solution.

If a photo has been saved from an email or web page directly to the iPad, there is a trash can icon that you can use to delete a photo.

However, if a photo was saved to the iPad via an iTunes sync your SOL. The only way to delete it is with another iTunes sync. And to put it bluntly, that six. It is an Aplenty decision that ranks right up there with no support for Flash.
