How to Put iPad in Landscape Mode

I am an expert computer user, having written many software titles for OSx as well as PC and Linux and Unix. But I am finding the iPad exceedingly difficult to learn.

I can muddle through the basic things, but there is one thing I have not figured out how to do, and after searching the Internet and this forum, I still can't find out how to do it.

How do I put the iPad in landscape mode? I feel like such an idiot because I have tried to figure out how to put it in landscape mode for hours, and can't find the option anywhere. I can't believe I'm the only person who can't figure this out.

Thanks for the help!

Hi. There is a specific problem with iPad Air 2 since iOS 10.1.1, where it locks randomly in one orientation. Restarting the device (not just sleep/wake) usually fixes it, until it happens again. This is discussed in this thread, Screen rotation not working. Please report it to Apple here https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html, and be sure to mention your iPad Air 2.

Hi. My theory's a bit more mundane. The iPad Air 2 is the only one with the M8 motion processor, and it's the only one with a barometer. The barometer wasn't working in the original release of iOS 10. It was fixed in iOS 10.1.1 when rotation went haywire. Maybe we restored the wrong old version of the M8 firmware? Pure speculation, of course...

It suddenly dawned on me, as to why we iPad Air 2 owners are still enduring this bug, even after at least three IOS updates. All this time I was assuming they had some difficult technical issue trying to fix it, like it was just a real hard problem and they haven't figured it out yet. Nah. If you think about it, that seems unlikely. I'm leaning towards an alternative theory, which is that they have *no desire* to fix this bug. Then all the known facts are neatly explained. Is that a horrible thought?

I've resent the same old feedback / bug report, again. Feel somewhat foolish for having done so.

Hold the iPad verticle and start Safari, now rotate it left or right 90 degrees.
If it doesn't go into landscape mode, check the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume up/down switch. It should be in the up position. If it's down then switch it and try again.

I have seen one person who had a hardware problem and had to get his unit replaced.

Cheers

I have the opposite problem: can't get OUT of landscape mode. The home screen is landscape, and so are all the other apps, no matter which way I press that view-lock button. The worst problem is in Pages, where I can't see the tool bar and thus edit the file. Do I download a new copy of Pages, or report this to Apple as a hardware issue? And what is Auto-Lock in the Settings? Turning it on/off did not resolve my problem.
