Keynote on iPad seems incompatible with my Desktop Keynote

I bought an iPad, VGA dongle and Keynote.app for the iPad today, my main aim being to give lectures and presentations without having to cart around my MacBook air.

Unfortunately, my presentations seem completely incompatible. Keynote themes aren't recognized, equations are mangled, standard Apple fonts like "Chalkboard" aren't recognized, and substituted fonts render the slides incomprehensible, and embedded PDFs for some reason appear corrupted. Embedded movies appear degraded in resolution. Transitions, build-ins, and build-outs are scrambled or ignored.

I'm absolutely stunned at just how incompatible these two versions of Keynote are. (I have iWork 2009 on my desktops). Am I simply missing something obvious, or is there any workaround apart from exporting all the slides as individual images and reassembling a lobotomized version for the iPod?

I had hoped to be able to take my lectures (several university courses worth) and simply put them on an iPod and deliver them. This is exceptionally frustrating.

I completely agree. An "iPad Safe-Mode" would be much appreciated. At least then the frustration of the watered down app occurs at the home/office, and not in front of the crowd...

It is unfortunate that keynote has turned out to be such a disappointment. I have had the same issue. If keynote had been had way descent, I could have replaced my laptop for 90% of my trips. now, the iPad will be nothing more than a toy to use around the house if I don't return it.

I'm surprised it was so hard to find this thread, and that this has been a recognized problem for so long. I just returned my ipad because ipad keynote couldn't handle many if not most of the images in slides created on my desktop version of keynote. I use a couple of different scientific and graphing programs (e.g. Kaleidagraph) that produce output that is easily cut and pasted into desktop keynote slides. But opening the keynote files with the ipad, many of the images are X'ed out. Using ipad for presentations is out. I hope that they make a more capable version of keynote for ipad soon (not to mention an ipad version of pages that will actually sync with icloud for download onto a desktop mac, but that is another thread...)

It should have been archived, having ended nearly 2 years ago when everyone was using different versions of both OS and the apps.

I could be wrong but I think these "best practices" aren't widely known; reps at the Apple store couldn't help me. Thanks for the link, I'll try the compression and PNG conversions.

A sad commentary on the training of the reps, since that note was first issued two years ago when the iOS app was released.
