iPad freezing when playing video.

Any time I play a video I can count on it freezing if it is html5. YouTube plays longer but if I have a video that's about 6 or 7 minutes it will freeze and playing a stored video will always freeze after about the same amount of time. In order to get out of it I have to do a hard reset! Anyone else having this problem?

I have an idea - albeit probably an extreme one...

Continue with our ATTEMPTS to play video and EVERY time that it freezes up watching video we come to this thread and post what app we were using when it froze up.

Two things will come from this.. 1) maybe we can find some type of similarities in our video playback issues, and 2) it will show Apple how much of a problem we are really having.

Does anyone's iPad NOT freeze when playing video for an extended amount of time? I'm wondering if there are a batch of them that have hardware issues or if this is a software issue that could be fixed by Apple in a future update.

If there are indeed some iPads that do not freeze at all when playing video, then a warranty exchange may be just what we need.

Anyone?

I'm not convinced Apple was (or is) aware of this problem. Even if each of us represents 100 other people, that's still a fraction of a percent of the ~500,000 iPads they've sold. This problem may not have surfaced until the units went into production. I mean, I assume most iPad owners can watch Netflix/ABC/YouTube for 15+ minutes without the system locking up and crashing? I assume they can watch them indefinitely, as they should? If that wasn't the case, I'm sure this problem would receive more press.

P.S. I just tried a system restore, and the problem didn't go away.

This forum is a hospital. Its where the ill come to be healed. Naturally, the people here are the ill ones. The healthy do not come here by and large, apart from us 'doctors' 😉 It does not follow that the hospital is representative of the world outside.

As someone else pointed out, 500,000 iPads and very few reports of this issue. Many many people mention in passing watching hours of video in other contexts, without problems.

I am NOT saying there isn't a problem, just that it may not be as simple nor as prevalent as the patients believe to be so.

Same problem. Most recently I returned on Safari to a video that blew up my iPad, requiring multiple restarts. It played fine, all the way through. So I tried again and it blew up. This problem seems to apply consistently (or more precisely, inconsistently but with regularity) to any ap that uses video. Do you think Apple will pay us for involuntarily serving as beta testers? Do you think a company with such a great reputation for quality control (after the iPod battery fiasco of long ago) should walk the walk?

I called Apple support this morning and was helped by a nice guy. He put me on hold while he discussed the problem with a senior technician, and when he came back he basically said I needed to go into a store. (As an aside, the senior tech had heard of this issue, so hopefully engineers will catch word soon too.)

He helpfully made a genius appointment for me tonight, from which I just returned. They basically handed me a new iPad (sans cables, power adapter, etc. but at least it wasn't refurbished) after I demonstrated the problem. It only took 30 seconds for a YouTube video to crash the system, which for the first time actually made me happy. I even got the colorful, animated corruption on screen.

I'm syncing the new iPad now. Assume all is well unless you hear from me later tonight. I recommend others with this problem follow suit.

I bought this iPad because of the abc and netflix apps ... With my iPad the wifi just can't feed the video fast enough. Using abc, YouTube, and netflix it buffers for 30 seconds then plays 10 seconds then buffers for another 30 etc ....

I have tried it on 7 different wifi routers .... The low powered ipad wifi chipset in it isn't working right .... My alienware m11x laptop connected and worked fine at all 7 places. My magical iPad magically doesn't work .... Yay apple 😟

Add me to the "my iPad freezes" after 6-7 minutes of video regardless of source. I had a friend bring me my iPad from the US (I live in Singapore). So now what am I going to do! Singapore won't get iPads for weeks (end of May?)
And to the people at Apple - it is not the applications or the video source. Resets, reloads, pristine condition, etc - still fails! Seems to be a machine problem. Let me know when there is fix please.

My Mom's does exactly the same thing- She can't even watch the "Guided Tours" of the iPad on the apple site on her iPad. The video plays for about 4 seconds then freezes. YouTube is a little better, but still freezes. I'm extremely frustrated as I can only help her over the phone, distance too far to witness personally. I'm really hoping I Apple resolves this as the iPad concept is perfect for my Mom.
