No, I think you have misunderstood. the above description is not what I said to do.
The headphone volume is X, the speaker volume is Y. They are unconnected. You can only change the headphone volume when the headphones are plugged in. The speaker volume can only be changed when the sound comes out of the speaker. You CANNOT change the speaker volume with the headphones plugged in.

As the headphones were in when you changed the volume, you have not changed the speaker volume, you have changed the headphone volume.
1. Pull the headphones out.
2. Get the music coming out of the speakers and DO NOT PLUG IN ANYTHING.
3. Set the required speaker volume
4. Now plug in the headphones
5. Set the headphone volume.
6. Unplug the headphones while the music is playing and the volume from the speaker will be where you set it.
