Headphone volume increases when pulling out headphones?

Thats because the volume setting for headphones is completely independent of the volume setting for the speaker and the phone etc. Pulling the plug out sets the volume to be correct for the speaker mode.

Leave it on speaker, lower the volume, put the plug back in and then pull it back out and the volume should not alter.

This happens to my iPhone too... I've got the 3GS but furthermore when I have my phone in my pocket with music playing the volume keeps going up to the volume which the speaker is set to and then back down to the headphone volume settings repeatedly.. It's really annoyng.. I think I should contact apple about it!

No, I think you have misunderstood. the above description is not what I said to do.

The headphone volume is X, the speaker volume is Y. They are unconnected. You can only change the headphone volume when the headphones are plugged in. The speaker volume can only be changed when the sound comes out of the speaker. You CANNOT change the speaker volume with the headphones plugged in.

As the headphones were in when you changed the volume, you have not changed the speaker volume, you have changed the headphone volume.

1. Pull the headphones out.

2. Get the music coming out of the speakers and DO NOT PLUG IN ANYTHING.

3. Set the required speaker volume

4. Now plug in the headphones

5. Set the headphone volume.

6. Unplug the headphones while the music is playing and the volume from the speaker will be where you set it.

In which case you have an easily demonstrable fault - get yourself a Genius bar appointment, show the shop person and prepare to pick up a new phone from them 🙂
