Anybody have good signal but slow download/Youtube speeds?

I always get a full wifi signal with my ipad, but i'm getting very slow download speeds. I've tried many different speed test apps to check, but can't get conclusive results on how slow it is.

For example, my various speed test apps show:

Speedtest.net app: 4mbps (using closest server) to 20mbps (using more distant server)
Xtreme Labs Speed Test app: 0.3mbps
Cisco Speed Test app: 5mbps

Tests aside however, I find the most obvious indication of my slow download speed occurs when I try to watch a HD trailer on Youtube. It will take about 10 minutes to download a 2.5 minute trailer (i.e. I can't stream without a lot of stopping). On the other hand, my ipod touch (first gen) and macbook pro can stream the same HD trailers without stopping.

Anybody else noticing the same slow download speeds, particularly when watching a HD trailer on Youtube? How does your iPad youtube speeds compare to your laptop or ipod/iphone Youtube speeds?

FYI, I have a 20mbps internet connection and a 802.11n time capsule. Was on the phone with Apple Support for over an hour tonight and we couldn't get this resolved.

Yes same issue here, I've run multiple tests using my routers bandwidth logs as reference.

My home connection maxes out at about 500kb/s download. All other wireless devices achieve this.

1) On my iPad any HD Youtube streaming jumps to 400kb/s for the first second but then drops to to the 250kb/s range and hold steadily there, causing the video to buffer. This also occurs while trying to watch video previews of movies on the iTunes store.

2) Downloading podcasts on the iTunes store maxes out my connection just fine!

3) This has only been an issue on my home network (in which I tried 2 separate routers, no security, dual and single band, n and g). On several other Wifi networks it's been fine! Including my 3g phone being used as a Wifi hotspot!

From these details I can only guess that it's a software issue with obscure router configurations, since I know the iPad is clearly capable of working fine in most situations, just not the one it's in most of the time (in my home).

I had this issue last night, and I haven't tried it this morning. Last night I couldn't stream a YouTube video at all. It would run for about 30 seconds and then not keep up with the data stream, thus interrupting the video. I have a new Airport Extreme with the latest firmware (3/31/2010 release). I had a maximum wifi link.

Using my PC, I navigated to the same YouTube video, and wrote down the URL. Inputting the URL by hand into ipad safari brought up the video with no issues whatsoever. The same video played fine without any interruptioins.

My conclusion is that the ipad YouTube app was at fault. Maybe the ipad YouTube app accesses a dedicated server that was oversubscribed? Maybe the server was busted?

Hi Barnahog,

How interesting! I seem to be noticing the exact same characteristics:

1) HD Youtube streaming jumps for the first second and then slows down dramatically after that causing video to buffer.

3) I only notice this problem on my home network as well... I've tried on 2 separate routers... no security... dual and single band... n, g, b, etc. On several other networks (coffee shop and friend's house), my wifi is fine.

What is also a big coincidence is that I'm also in Canada (where the iPad isn't available in stores yet)... who is your ISP? I live in Vancouver and use Novus.

Also, can you stream HD Youtube fine on your other wireless devices at home through wifi? All of my other devices (Macbook Pro, PC, iPod Touch) can stream fine.

I've also experienced this problem as well. Seems like other videos that stream through safari are fairly quick but when I use the "Youtube" app the transfer is slower than the playing video. Youtube seems generally unusable even with a great signal and connection. I also get more frequent "no connection" messages when using the Youtube application.

Comrades, I have the same slow download experience. This is a drum I was beating a couple of weeks ago. I suggest you try the iPhone browser speed test at dslreports.com.

On my wired PC with a cable connection, I get 25MB, which is what Comcast is selling me. On a PC, of course, I can test the speed in a browser with Flash and Java tests. I have the most confidence in Stanford University's Web100 based Network Diagnostic Tool. My point being, I know what browsing with a fast connection looks like, feels like.

On my iPad, using the FCC app, I get 22MB. Yowsa! Government-certified speed. (Incidentally, I get 15MB on my iPad using the speedtest.net app, and I get 13MB on my iPhone using the FCC app.) So the FCC says I'm getting the same speed (close enough) on my wifi iPad that I get on a wired desktop. Now, I clear the cache in Firefox on my PC and download the LATimes.com. Blink of an eye. I clear the cache on my iPad and do the same thing. One Mississippi, two Mississippi . . . . Oops, the download gets hung up somewhere. Ultimately, it takes 10-12 seconds to download the page.

This is my experience not just with the LA Times, but with every web page. I'd be interested to know how the experience of other iPad users compares. I say the speed of downloading internet pages on an iPad doesn't compare to the speed of the internet on a computer. Not even close. I don't care what those speed tests apps say. They’re out of whack with downloading reality. If they're somehow accurate, it's because they're measuring something that doesn't relate to downloading web pages in the iPad browser. Also, if they're accurate, that means the downloading speed I'm getting is as good as it gets.

I'm not anywhere near knowledgeable enough to explain this, but I would make two points: I think there are a lot of people like me who do all their newspaper reading on the internet, and who might have hoped that the iPad would enable them to get out of their offices and do internet reading at the same speed. That is not the case. The speed of iPad downloads is much closer to the speed of iPhone downloads than to the speed of downloads on a computer. (ii) Getting fast connections via wifi is a problem that has been solved for years by every computer maker, or router gizmo maker, whatever. Why can't the iPad technology offer the same result/experience that any laptop does?

The results from the speed test apps, both FCC and speedtest.net, are illusory. I believe the dslreports iPhone speed test, which works within Safari, gives a better measure of download speed.

I have noticed the same issue. When I use the YouTube App or use Mobile Safari in youtube mobile mode, the videos play for a few seconds and stop to buffer then they load VERY slow, and can't keep up with the play speeed.

I have done many tests and I notice that if I view the same video on my laptop connected to the same Wi-Fi it is fine.

I also tested this by setting the browser to mimic a desktop browser, then went to the youtube web site, viewed a video there, it was perfect, very fast and no stopping or slow downloading... The SAME video on the SAME network a few seconds later through the YouTube APP was slow Bascially unusable.

I have concluded that it is NOT a network issue, but rather something with youtube. The only way I can view the videos in the "desktop" mode of Safari on iPad is to use the html5 beta of youtube, and not all videos are html5, but those I can view are perfect.

In the YouTube app, they may be going to other servers at youtube which present all of the videos in a format compatible with the iPad/iPhone. Either this server is overloaded or somethign on their end, or there is something with the encoding that makes these videos very Huge, and thus they take a long time to download and stream.

Maybe because Google and Apple are fighting, Google has refused to fix the issue on their end.

This is just my guess after testing it on my device on different networks. I can clearly see it is a problem only when using the Youtube app.

I hope Apple will look into it and address it soon, it makes using the amazing media device (iPad) unusable when I want to watch my youtube videos.

(By the way, there may be other users who DO have network problems, and these problems could also present the same symptoms, in my case I am sure I am not having wiFi/network issues)

Yeah I'm getting the exact same thing, I got my iPad two nights ago (32GB) and it has been taking a very long time to load YouTube videos. Just starting tonight my wifi is going out every five minutes, so I have to close safari, open tools, turn off wifi, turn it back on, then open safari back up again, then it will work (for five minutes then again two to five minutes later...).

Hope apple will come out eith and update to fix this very soon!!!!

Same here. When the video catches up to the buffer (within the first few seconds) it seems to stop downloading most of the time and I am just stuck there. This seems to happen in the YouTube app, and even more so on YouTube videos embedded in webpages. I think it is mostly YouTube videos. Right after unsuccessfully playing an embedded YouTube video I want to the apple site and watched the whole iPhone 4 keynote without any issues. Only other time I have seen similar issues was on some sites that recently switched to html5, but seems like they might just have implementation issues without their controls. Definitely a YouTube issue though.

I have same issue. First about 10 seconds smooth video play then it stops while the progress bar for the download sporadically speeds up and slows down constantly. On my laptop the videos stream without interruption. I have the same issue with my iPhone as well.
