Canon 7D - Connecting to Mac / FCP7

Have 7D which I am trying to connect to mac directly through camera/USB (no CF reader as yet)
The camera does not show up on the desktop as previous cameras normally do - is this correct?
I have to use apple 'Image Capture' application to recognise the camera, or iPhoto. Have still not figured out a proper workflow with this though - do I just drag over my movie clips from image capture to a folder and then point FCP7 to that folder?

I've also downloaded the new plugin for FCP7. In the 'Log & Transfer' how do I get it to link to my clips?

Thanks

Just a note of warning to anyone coming across this thread - I was literally about to purchase the 'Lexar CompactFlash FireWire 800 Card Reader' when I stumbled across a load of reviews on Amazon.
The vast majority gave it full marks, but just lately there were two posts from Mac users saying that it wasn't compatible AT ALL with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 - and in one case has even damaged a Firewire 800 hub!!!!!!!!!!!

I called up Lexar for clarification if they have fixed this, or if it is an issue, and the US telephone support woman said "....No, it's DEFINATELY compatible!!"
There was even a response from a Lexar official to the Amazon reviewer saying "yes, it is not compatible with Snow Leopard!!!!!!

Talk about misinformation!!!!!

Any recommendations then for a good FW800 CF reader?
