Bright areas on one side during black screen?

I'm being picky, but wanna make sure this is just how it is, and not a problem with my copy.

When viewing a black screen - that is, a screen of black content, the side that would be on the right when holding the iPad in portrait mode has a couple of brighter areas, like the old school backlit displays. It's not terribly bright, just noticeable in that case.

64GB iPad, iPhone OS 3.1.3

Mine has uneven backlight too. On a white screen, the left side is slightly brighter. It is very subtle, but bugs me. My family members think I am crazy.

Is there an easy way to get the screen to show all-black or all-white in order to check more closely? I have not seen an iPad sized flashlight app....

It's a common "problem" with LCDs. The bigger the screen, the easier it is to spot the so called LCD bleeding.

This might help you understand the logic behind it:

The entire surface of an LCD is backlit from behind by a light source (CCFL light) and the LCD blocks out the light that is not needed. Backlight bleeding occurs when this light is not 100% blocked allowing some light to "bleed" through the LCD causing spots of lighter areas on a dark or black background. Unfortunately, almost all LCDs suffer at least a small amount of backlight bleed because the opacity of LCD panels is not enough to block all light.

I see exactly the same thing, though for me it’s not so much the entire left side as a strip that’s about a quarter of the screen wide.

I went to my local Apple Store to have it replaced, and still see it on my replacement. It was a lot less obvious in the well lit Apple Store and they had to take it into the basement to verify that I was not crazy.

Hi All

I seem to have this on my IPAD 1 ... It started today.. after close 2 two years.. and it has been a very good ipad so much so that for two years it has taught my 2 year old son everything.. now.. I think after so many drops.. today i saw that I have on my right side of the screen am seeing these lighting areas as if I am watching a stage with spot lights.. moreover the brightness (auto mode ) is not workign and if i increase my brightness the right side starts heating up... plus i also notice a small gap at the point of the volume button... Now.. my Question is would an LC Change help it.. Wow.. I just noticed that on the other sides there is a little brightness as well.. but only the right side shows a splot light affect?? any idea

The iPad uses LED backlighting, not CFL.

I see this too. In portrait mode I see the LED bright spots on the right side of the display. It's looks like a light diffuser issue?

Same thing is happening to me on my IPad4. It is pretty annoying, but it looks like a pretty common issue. Who knows, it could just be the glass on the screen doing it.
