Heard on the radio on the way into work this morning, I think it was on CNBC, that Apple was coming out with a "NEW" Operating System for the iPad to address problems relating to multitasking. I just purchased an iPad on 7 April.....
Do I need to return my new iPad wait till the "new" operating system come out or will I automatically have my operating system upgraded by Apple when this "new” system comes out? I have also purchased the “extended” maintenance package….
Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).
Have a nice day."
The reference used pertains to the iPhone and iTouch models... the iPad gets multitasking with the iPhone 4.0 OS release.
"1. Multitasking, Background Location and Push Notifications
Multitasking is coming to the iPhone. The feature as demonstrated at the event will not reduce the battery life of the phone, nor will it cause performance issues. The important features of multitasking on the iPhone and iPad include; double clicking the bezel to bring up a dock with the apps you are running, background audio streaming, the ability to receive VoIP calls (Skype was featured) while running other apps, and pausing where you are in an app to go to another."
Actually. Nowhere on Apple.com does it explicitly say that the iPad gets multitasking. Would it be "insane" for the iPad not to get it? Yes. However, it would be reassuring to the existing users (i.e. early adopters), if Apple explicitly said that multitasking would be enabled on the iPad.
Ah, that follows the Mac OS X route. Makes sense. I wonder if Apple will switch the iPhone updates over or if ALL of them will be free. The iTouch update path is the worst, since Apple charges for any type update be it major, minor or bug fix. At a minimum the last should be free.
