Apple AirPort Extreme Connection Issues

I've been having some really strange connection issues with my Airport Extreme and other Apple devices.

This tends to only happen in morning or late at night. The wireless connection will randomly drop out. My iPod Touch 3rd Gen will 'see' the network but report no Internet access. My Apple iMac 24" desktop that is hard wired into the AEX will report no Internet access. Trying wireless on the same desktop will not work either. It 'sees' the network but reports no IP address. My old Dell XPS 400 Windows 7 based desktop is hard wired into a DLink Gigabit switch which in turn is hard wired to the AEX. This desktop will receive the connection fine, no issues at all.

The only way the Apple devices will get the Internet connection again is if I use the AirPort Utility on my iMac and reset the router. Then everything works great all day until either later that night or the next morning. Not at the same time every day, but it seems to be mid to late morning when I start using the equipment and experience the issue. The old Dell PC is used as early as 7am everyday with no issues at all.

I can't tell if this is a problem with the firmware update I did recently or some sort of electrical noise. 6 months ago the router was connected to the surge protection outlets on an APC Back-UPS RS 800 (800VA). The battery failed in it and I haven't replaced it since. My iMac is connected to the exact same model in the next room, which is newer and still working fine. The issues with the router (assuming it's the router here) have only started happening since the last AirPort firmware update. There's nothing running in my house abnormally or during these connection drops, but this is an old house with older electrical circuits. Outlets are not normally 3 prong grounded, but in these two locations (by the router and in the next room at the iMac) are. I had them replaced a year ago for the 3-prong grounded outlets. There is a whole house surge connector in the basement to prevent large electrical spikes. I'm in southeaster Wisconsin so about the same time this has been occurring, it's been the rainy season with many big storms.

Something in my mind keeps making me thing this is electrical noise, and I should put another APC in place so that there is line conditioning in the place the router & cable modem are connected. My mother uses the old Dell for light gaming and Internet use. It's not really worth it to me to buy a huge battery backup system to keep it running, as the system probably has a $150 value or less. I'm contemplating a full APC backup replacement, or a simple low VA APC system to use just for line conditioning and such to help stabilize the AEX Router, cable model, etc. We get about 1 or less blackouts per year. Brownouts are 2-3 a year. This is why my iMac will always be on a UPS.

For reference, my wired network is Cat6 with gigabit equipment. The AEX is based on 802.11n draft, dated 2007 MB053LL/A Model A1143 on the box.

My system looks like this: <<Internet>>---Cable Modem---AEX---1.)Apple iMac, 2.)Vonage Phone Box, 3.) Dlink Gigabit 10 Port Switch. The Dell desktop, nearby Sony Blu-Ray player, Xbox 360, and 2 other wired ethernet connections are all in the switch.

Anyone have anything I can try here? I'm open to any suggestions as this is a bit frustrating & annoying.

same issues here. Apple said it was some type of interference, I have unplugged all external devices, phones etc, still no good. I can connect to the internet on the desktop but not on the laptop. Funny thing is that even though I can connect on the desktop, when I do a scan out of utilities, it said there are no wireless devices connected, so it does not even recognize that it is connected. The only way to correct the problem for short periods of time is to unplug and replug.

i think i figured out my problem of the light staying green and the network cutting out late at night (at 3 am).

on the night i used my old airport it was rock solid all night

today is the night i will use the new airport to see if it is rock solid

but i believe the problem is theres probably some wifi to ethernet bridges, that
the new airport extreme just does not like, and when it encounters one, it causes the airport connection to go out. i believe the 3 am time that it went out 4 days in a row was my dishnetwork box connected to my linksys WRT54GS running dd-wrt, trying to "call out"

when it tries to call out, the new airport extreme basestation (dual band 2)
locks up tight

ill wait and see tonight if this solves the problem

if anyone else has a problem with an airport locking up late at night, try turning off your computers/devices by one, each day and see if you can nail it down to one.

It's been about a week and a half since my issue happened, and everything seemed fine, except now all of a sudden tonight it happened again.

I was watching a movie, and decided to use my iPod Touch to fetch my email. When I tried it said there was no network connection. I checked the settings and it could 'see' the network, but there was no IP or connection to the Internet. My iMac was on in the next room under screensaver, I tried the Internet connection, no luck. My desktop PC appeared to be working, but just to make sure I dumped the Internet cache and tried going to a fresh web page. No luck, it found no connection either. Solid green light on the airport extreme the whole time.

I called Apple Support (left my info & name/number on the voicemail of the tech I last spoke with). Now I'm waiting for a call back from him about this.

In the meantime I reset the router. Things worked fine for about 10 minutes, then the router dropped everything again. I did another reset, and so far no issue yet.

Same exact symptoms I have. If I disconnect the Airport Extreme alltogether and all other devices and connect my Vonage to my cable modem, I get a dial tone again.

Thank God for cellphones. I would hate having to go fiddle with my router and equipment in order to reset everything to be able to make an emergency 911 call.

Putting the Vonage inbetween the cable modem and the Airport Extreme causes the Airport Extreme to not function at all, so I've never done it.

I contacted Apple Support again and this time they are mailing out a replacement unit under my AppleCare Plan.

I also purchased a 750VA APC UPS because I want to make sure there's no electrical issues going on, and to keep my cable modem, airport extreme, vonage adapter, switch, and cordless phone backed up. Well backed up for 15min, but I've never had a power outtage last longer then that anyway. I want to rule out power issues if I can and this is the best way I know of besides investing in expensive power conditioning equipment. As long as it regulates the voltage up and down within reason, it should improve things if I get any problems. This way I always have Internet, Vonage, and Wireless/ethernet in case of emergency. When that doesn't work, I can always use my cellphone.

Slightly off topic, but I'm once again impressed with the Apple technical support. I'm yet to talk to a foreign voice, and I'm getting a human voice on the line within 5minutes of calling, even on weekends. Tier 2 reps have business cellphones that are coded with extension #'s. If you need to call back a Tier 2 rep, you call a electronic answering service, enter the extension number, and it forwards you to their phone. You leave a voicemail message with case # and they call you back when they don't have a normal support call coming in. It's a great system and I wish other companies handled it this way.

I've had exactly the same problems described here and have tried everything that Apple Tech-Support suggested to no avail. Eventually, Apple switched the Extreme for a new replacement; but this has been no better, continuing to regularly drop the signal for no apparent reason.

I'm arranging for an engineer to come out and run hardwire connections for the Internet, and I'm afraid that the Extreme will be consigned to the trashcan.

Same connection issues with me.
A new Airport Extreme (7.5.1), a new iPad WiFi 32GB and the problems began. Before I never had any internet issues with my MacBook Pro (10.6.4) and several Windows and Linux machines.
Now when working with the Apple hardware I have several drop outs per day, wlan is visible, AirPort is visible, but no internet connection. It happens when browsing with the MacBook or when trying to reconnect with the iPad. To get a working connection I have to switch off and on modem and AirPort, and sometimes even reboot the MacBook.
No happy customer 😟
