Apple AirPort Extreme Connection Issues

I've been having some really strange connection issues with my Airport Extreme and other Apple devices.

This tends to only happen in morning or late at night. The wireless connection will randomly drop out. My iPod Touch 3rd Gen will 'see' the network but report no Internet access. My Apple iMac 24" desktop that is hard wired into the AEX will report no Internet access. Trying wireless on the same desktop will not work either. It 'sees' the network but reports no IP address. My old Dell XPS 400 Windows 7 based desktop is hard wired into a DLink Gigabit switch which in turn is hard wired to the AEX. This desktop will receive the connection fine, no issues at all.

The only way the Apple devices will get the Internet connection again is if I use the AirPort Utility on my iMac and reset the router. Then everything works great all day until either later that night or the next morning. Not at the same time every day, but it seems to be mid to late morning when I start using the equipment and experience the issue. The old Dell PC is used as early as 7am everyday with no issues at all.

I can't tell if this is a problem with the firmware update I did recently or some sort of electrical noise. 6 months ago the router was connected to the surge protection outlets on an APC Back-UPS RS 800 (800VA). The battery failed in it and I haven't replaced it since. My iMac is connected to the exact same model in the next room, which is newer and still working fine. The issues with the router (assuming it's the router here) have only started happening since the last AirPort firmware update. There's nothing running in my house abnormally or during these connection drops, but this is an old house with older electrical circuits. Outlets are not normally 3 prong grounded, but in these two locations (by the router and in the next room at the iMac) are. I had them replaced a year ago for the 3-prong grounded outlets. There is a whole house surge connector in the basement to prevent large electrical spikes. I'm in southeaster Wisconsin so about the same time this has been occurring, it's been the rainy season with many big storms.

Something in my mind keeps making me thing this is electrical noise, and I should put another APC in place so that there is line conditioning in the place the router & cable modem are connected. My mother uses the old Dell for light gaming and Internet use. It's not really worth it to me to buy a huge battery backup system to keep it running, as the system probably has a $150 value or less. I'm contemplating a full APC backup replacement, or a simple low VA APC system to use just for line conditioning and such to help stabilize the AEX Router, cable model, etc. We get about 1 or less blackouts per year. Brownouts are 2-3 a year. This is why my iMac will always be on a UPS.

For reference, my wired network is Cat6 with gigabit equipment. The AEX is based on 802.11n draft, dated 2007 MB053LL/A Model A1143 on the box.

My system looks like this: <<Internet>>---Cable Modem---AEX---1.)Apple iMac, 2.)Vonage Phone Box, 3.) Dlink Gigabit 10 Port Switch. The Dell desktop, nearby Sony Blu-Ray player, Xbox 360, and 2 other wired ethernet connections are all in the switch.

Anyone have anything I can try here? I'm open to any suggestions as this is a bit frustrating & annoying.

Rigormortis: I may have missed a follow up from you but did you ever pin down what the problem was?

I am having this problem on a refurb Airport Extreme. Every morning about 5:30 my light goes to blinking amber. I turn off my DSL modem, wait about 30 seconds, turn it back on and my light goes green after about a minute and stays green until the next morning.
I believe all firmware and such are upto date.
From reading the thread it seems like replacing/swapping the Airport extreme has worked but that seems like overkill. Shouldnt it be working out of the box, refurb or not?

I've been having connection issues with my Airport Extreme, similar to the ones described in this thread.

Running 10.6.4 on the laptops and the Airport Extreme is a Dual band II running 7.5.1

I've setup a Main login and a Guest login. I have 3 devices that use the network, a new 17" Macbook Pro, a 15" Macbook Pro, and my iPhone 4. My wife uses the Guest login as does my iPhone, regularly and reliably. I use the Main login to be able to configure and change the base station and printer that's hard wired to the Extreme. When I put my laptop to sleep and wake it up the list of networks doesn't reliably display all of the available networks, nor does it reliably reconnect to the Main network. I have to retype the password several times, or restart and retype the password several times. There doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to the issue. I pretty much used the default settings when setting up the network. There are a few other networks around the same channel, but nothing crazy, so I don't think it's interference.

I can't tell if it's an issue with my laptop or my Airport. Any thoughts?

I was having similar issues awhile ago and traced it back to my cable modem- it would lose authentication somehow and then would pass a 192.168 address to my network via dhcp ,so they could see each other if they had a 192.168 address but not the airport station which was still on 10.0.

I had noticed that my IP addresses were different and the router was different when having the problem, when I put the router IP into a browser it would bring up the cable modem setup page, which the log would report losing authentication. Eventually I replaced the modem and all has been well.

My issue is that between approx 6 and 8 AM each day, my internet connection slows to a snail's pace or non-existent. I thought sure it was my cable provider (couldn't be my apple equipment!!) and proceeded to call them many times and give them heck. they always said their equipment was fine. Finally, a cable tech came out and everything checked out on their end. She suggest hardwiring my IMAC directly to the Airport Express through an ethernet cable and lo and behold everything works fine. The problem is still occurring with the Macbook which is not hardwired. i went back to the 7.2 firmware which didnt help and thinking of resetting the airport express and seeing what happens. glad I'm not the only one having the problem. Have had my equipment for 3 years but problem only became apparent to me when i started doing on-line gaming in the AM.

I am having the same issue running 10.6.4 and 7.4.2 on a Dual Band Extreme. There are three computers, a printer, and a Roku on the network. Bellsouth (AT&T) is the ISP.

It will just randomly drop the PPPoE connection. Seems like mornings and evenings are the prime times. It will pick it up on it's one in anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 minute.

To FELLOW Airport Extreme Sufferers & other readers still following this thread

In trying to address this issue, I'd like to remind Forum posters to _CLEARLY read the submissions of others_ -AND- _be more detailed or specific_ in submitting our replies so we can try to better identify the factors or conditions related to the stated problem.
.
Regarding the topic of Airport Extreme Dropping "Connection" ... there are TWO very broad types of problems that people are writing about.
These are separate and quite different issues and should not be confused with one another.

-----
• Type 1 - problems with computers establishing or maintaining connection to the LAN or the AEBS
- - this type is primarily a NETWORK connection problem & mostly a wireless problem
-----
• Type 2 - problems with AEBS establishing or maintaining connection to the ISP service -and- loss of IP Address
- - this is an INTERNET connection problem

We each need to be clear with ourselves and then in our postings just exactly what types of connectivity problem we are actually experiencing and reporting.

To give an overly simplified example,
if one (or more) of your devices has trouble "seeing" -or- connecting -or- staying connected to your network .... then this is a Type 1 (NETWORK) type problem. It mostly occurs with wireless connection but can also affect wired connection to the network.

if, on the other hand, you have a signal, can "see" & connect to your private network, but .... lose or can't connect to the internet.... then this is a Type 2 (INTERNET) type problem. It involves a dropped connection between AEBS and your internet service provider and loss of WAN-side IP Address. This type of connection problem has nothing to do with radio frequency, channel selection or overload, wifi interference, antenna range, etc.

This type problem will affect users connected both wired & wireless. The problem occurs when AEBS is used to handle DSL PPPoE service connections -and- MAYBE also some cable service connections. So far, the problem does NOT seem to occur if you have the modem handle to PPPoE connection.
.
.
Various users have posted info confirming some of observations of others while also noting some differences in how the problem ( lost IP Address & internet connection ) occurs with them.
For example, for SOME the connection eventually RESETS _by itself_ -yet- for SOME they must restart & cycle their AEBS.
Another example, for SOME dropped internet seems to occur periodically & repeatedly regardless of ongoing activity or inactivity, -while- for SOME ( +like me+ ) it is specific & predictable... occurring only during streaming of media such as YouTube.

For me, the problem does NOT occur if I connect to my ISP by connecting _directly to the DSL modem_ using the laptop and SYSTEM PREF's --> NETWORK to manage the PPPoE connection, only when the _AEBS handles the PPPoE connection_.
So the problem is clearly a function of the Airport Extreme Base Station.
It occurs both wireless and wired - AND - it occurs with models A1354 (Oct 2009), A1301 (Mar 2009), A1143 (Jan 2007).

So far, it is unclear if this AEBS problem relates just only to DSL connections
-or- just to PPPoE connections
-or- or just to certain ISP's
-or- just to certain modems.
Can anyone submit info that might refute or confirm any of these factors ?

Any other postings regarding dropped *_internet connections_* which included very specific descriptions of your config, setup & usage during the dropped connection MAY be helpful in building a data set we can report to AppleCare.

I still have an open ongoing case with them and it is now escalated to Engineering Dept.

I will offer to pass along any other relevant info from forum posters as I speak with Apple.

If you too are having the dropped internet connection type problem,
YOU CAN WATCH IT HAPPENING IN THIS MANNER

Set Airport in Menubar to "SHOW TIME CONNECTED"
- and -
Open Airport Utility --> AIRPORT --> SUMMARY window and leave it showing somewhere on your screen while you web browse.

Once the connection drops or is lost ...
... in the Airport Utility Summary window - you will see the loss of the assigned IP Address
- AND -
... in the Menubar - the time connected resets to 00:00:00
.
Hope the above is informative or helpful to others.
