Server Admin can't connect

Hello All,

Recently the server admin application connection stopped working on one of my servers. I'm running OS X Server 10.6 and trying to connect locally or from other 10.6 machines. No matter what it refuses the connection with the following error whether local or over the network.

"Could not connect to servername.local
Server Admin was unable to connect to the server at servername.local"

I have tried 127.0.0.1, localhost, servername.local, servername and everything fails.

The server is ping-able over the network and changeip -checkhostname reveals the DNS is setup correctly.

This use to work fine and the other day it just stopped working. I deleted and reinstalled the server admin software. I restarted the server and is it is still not working.

The server is running 10.6.2 and I am hesitant to upgrade to 10.6.3, I don't want to cause more issues by running this update and I don't even know if that will fix the issue.

Does anyone know what I can try to get server admin working again for this server?

Thank you very much!

Unbelievably this also worked for me.. a big thanks for posting this! I actually had a macbook pro with server installed and used the plist files from that.. after i connected and it finished installation it kicked me off the web.. (no internet connection).. I also had two windows open for the authentication step - one was by opening the server app - the second was from the "manage" "connect to server" solution that someone offered as a solution somewhere - the window that was from the manage connect to server - actually worked and finished installation..

I had the same symptom, with servermgrd wasn't loaded.

After some research, I found that some admin had changed the IP-address of the server to DHCP (??😕) and at the next restart (when trying to solve a different problem) it changed IP, and none of the computers on the network could get in contact with the DNS server. As the servers own network settings now were looking for a DNS server that didn't exist on that IP address, things went crazy.

Bottom line: If you can get in contact with a DNS server, the servermgrd isn't launched. You could call that a bug. 🙂
