iPad remote control for Keynote?

Background: I am a professional speaker that HATES podiums, so I want to be able to control an iPad Keynote presentation from anywhere on stage.

(1) Is there an iPhone app that can control an iPad Keynote presentation in show mode (slide advance, slide backup, etc.)?
(2) If "no", would an MacBook Pro remote work?
(3) If "no" any other ideas on how to do this Keynote/iPad remote control?

Yip - I sent Satechi an email asking if they can verify that the remote works with Keynote on iPad and the response I received was, "It will not. Unfortunately the remote only works with Keynote for Mac OS X at the moment."

It's also worth remembering that the issue is not in finding a remote that works on the iPad (there are many options there), but finding one that works in Keynote. Apple of deliberately disabled remote functionality which is native to the OS in order to force the pairing within Keynote - INSANE, but true ...grumble, grumble, grumble.

My friend who asked me to help him out on this has finally fixed this issue. However, as you all appreciate this required a jailbreak on his ipad. Not ideal but he now has an Eclipse Touch Mouse (£9.99 from play.com) working and it clicks forward in keynote. The mouse is slim and fits snuggly into the hand. That said, it cannot click backwards but he is happy with that limitation. Not ideal but frankly better than other current possibilities e.g. buy an iphone!

Hi Tulse

I'd like to thank you. I have just come across your post ref NOT to pair the iPad with iPhone.

I purchased the Keynote Remote app some time ago with the intention of using my iPad 2 for presentations so that I could fly with only carryon luggage even when restricted by some airlines to 7kg.

Could I get it to work - no. Until I read your post this morning.

It became clear that the reason it wouldn't work is because I was pairing the iPhone with the iPad before trying to connect with Keynote on the iPad and Keynote Remote on the iPhone.

So I turned off wifi, turned off bluetooth and started as you had suggested by just using bluetooth and pairing Keynote on the iPad with Keynote Remote on the iPhone. It works!!!

For anyone else reading this who is trying to do this with an iPhone 3G - it works; that's what I'm using.

So thanks again - well done

Agreed, its not as ergonomic as a dedicated remote. But in a pinch it works quite well, and a lot of people I know are unaware that it works, and they don't know the forward and reverse functions which can screw you up if you don't know why your slide just reversed instead of advanced. Just thought I'd mention it for those who could use a back up plan when they can't get a WiFi or BT connection to KeyNote.

I agree with you Alani,

The Keynote Remote app on the iPhone works fine to control Keynote presentations on the iPad.

All you have to do is:

1. switch on Bluetooth on both devices

2. don't try to pair the two devices in the Bluetooth settings!

3. Start Keynote Remote app on the iPhone (I used 3G and iPod touch)

4. Start your Keynote presentation on the iPad

5. Go to Tools/Advanced/Remote, enable Remotes

6. Select "Your iPhone" and enter the 4-digit passcode

7. You now should be able to play the slideshow by Keynote Remote.

With the right tweaks this can be one. I can't post details here since the apple thought police keep deleting my posts. I use a standard Bluetooth mouse detailed above and a targus Bluetooth mouse/clicker/pointer withoproblem to control keynote and any other app I wish. Forward and backwards both fully work.
