Google maps compass

I have used the compass feature in maps successfully at home. Currently, I am in an area with no hot spots but I do have Internet connectivity by DSL. Maps cannot determine the location which isn't surprising but the compass feature doesn't work either. Is anyone else seeing this? Any way around this?
