MBP often won't wake after sleep.

Quite often when I shut the lid of my MBP and it goes to sleep I will open it later and it will not wake.
It sounds like the hard drive starts up (there is some noise) but the screen remains black and the keys have no effect.
The only way to get out of the situation is to hold the on/off button until it switches off.
Upon start up no work or application windows are recovered!

This has caught me out a couple of times and I have lost work. It is very frustrating.
Has anyone had similar problems and/or does anyone have any suggestions.
I cannot take it in to a shop to be checked for the next few months as I simply can't afford to be without my laptop!!

MBP (late 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.8), purchased quite soon (half a month to a month maybe) after new model was released

Oh I see. Crash logs are hard to interpret.

But the black screen of death is not. He's having Kernel Panics. So his wake up from sleep is more likely related to whatever hardware issue he is having.

As far as what you call generic fixes, they have worked for some. Software Updates delta updates do have problems sometimes. Since they are meant for just the Mac they are downloading to, and are not the complete OS update as the Combo is, sometimes what your Mac may need is missing in the delta, or the delta is corrupt for various reasons.

If you don't want to try this simple thing, then that's up to you. The other tips I gave were geared more to this issue, but I believe everyone should download the Combo updates over the automatic Deltas. I do, and never have any sleep issues.

Dale, I've tried everything except the Combo Update, and I'm doing that one as we speak. I'd gone about a week without the issue, but today the simple act of closing it, putting in my laptop bag and moving it to another location was enough to bring the problem back again. Has anyone sent these console logs off to Apple yet?

Hopefully the Combo Update will do the trick.

I have been facing the same problem for the last week or so. I am pretty sure it started happening after 10.6.3. This is the most basic feature of a laptop and it's annoying the heck out of me. I feel like throwing it out of the window.

I visited the Genius bar at the Apple store. The guy did the same things mentioned in this post, like SMC reset and delete the "sleep image", but that hasn't helped. I am trying the combo update now, but I don't have much hope. What is the best way to get Apple's attention?

ok, here goes...

I have recently bought a few months old Macbook Pro MB990A/B, now the person who i bought it from said there was nothing wrong with it, im now thinking otherwise....

I have completely re-installed the os from the discs supplied, done all the apple updates and i am getting the same problem as everybody else here.

it locks up after being in sleep mode, eg black screen, lights on keyboard though, i then hold power button in to switch it off, and then when switching back on, it sometimes dont go any further than the apple screen with sound bit, only way to get it to boot is hold power button down to switch off, then power it on again, sometimes can take up to 3-5 goes at this.

after reading through this message board, i have reset the PRAM & SMC, i have got the combo update (which was in the apple updates) and it still is playing up.

do you think I still have a software issue or could it be a hardware fault????

i do have a spare hard drive, which i could use with disk utility and copy everything across to try??

any other info would be greatly appreciated

firstly, thanks all for your replies

heres the update

i started the mac up with the install disk in whilst holding D, it passed the basic test, and i stopped it doing a extensive test as the time remaining hadnt moved for ages.

at this stage I remembered I had 2 x 1GB memory modules, that i took out of my macbook (late 2008 model) as i upgraded to 4GB. I thought lets swap the memory out. I replaced it and put the unit into sleep mode and came out of sleep straight away, done few more times and everytime came back ok. so with that memory in i decided to do a hardware test, i ran the extensive test and it completed after 30minutes. I then took the memory back out and put the original memory back in and started running the extensive test again. as i am typing this it as been over 30minutes - closer to 40minutes. it has just finished it claims no trouble found and total time of 30minutes 10seconds..dont think thats correct????

I have booked into a genius bar tomorrow, so i will report back with the outcome, the unit is still under warranty (lucky for me)

think i will try and use time machine to get a backup before i go though.

my guess is faulty memory. any other info anybody can let me to try, i am happy to try, so hopefully this might help others
