Problems with Safari: graphical glitches + flash scrolling errors

Hi

There are strange things going on with my Mac and its Safari browser. 2 main problems:

1) Whenever I drag a tab off the tab bar to create a new window, this happens. A graphical glitch that just sticks and won't move at all:

2) Under Adobe Flash 10.1 (RC), Safari sometimes refuses to scroll through any embedded flash. For example, scrolling down a page with the two finger gesture, if the cursor meets a piece of flash content, it refuses to continue scrolling - I have to move the mouse somewhere else and continue.

Does anyone know what might be going on?

Thanks in advance! 🙂

HI Max,

1) Whenever I drag a tab off the tab bar to create a new window, this happens. A graphical glitch that just sticks and won't move at all:

From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...

From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.

Under Adobe Flash 10.1 (RC), Safari sometimes refuses to scroll through any embedded flash.

Uninstall then reinstall a new copy of the Flash plugin.

Uninstall Flash

Install Flash

Flash Player support on 64-bit operating systems

Try running in 32-bit mode if it's set for 64. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.

Then repair disk permissions...

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Hi

OK, I did as you said but the issue is still happening. However, I think I may have pinned down when it started happening. Earlier today I visited the online store at adobe.com and it had a strange slate coloured scroll bar instead of the usual Aqua one. Since then, Safari has been all screwy.

I can't think of anything else - would resetting the .plist help?

Thanks again for all your help Carolyn! 🙂

would resetting the .plist help?

It's worth a try.

Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

Relaunch Safari.

Thank you for the star.

Ok...

Shockwave Flash 10.1 r53 — from file “Flash Player.plugin”. The plugin is outdated. Uninstall then reinstall the Flash Player plugin.

Uninstall Flash

Install Flash

Relaunch Safari... if it crashes or you have scrolling problems, then go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.

Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

OK, I've tried everything suggested and I've basically reset the entire browser but it's still having these problems! 😟

This is the website that I think caused the problem: https://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/index.cfm?store=OLS-US&storeRegion=US&nr= 0&promoid=FCRWM#loc=enus&view=olscat&catID=SPECIALS&store=OLS-US

Notice the unusual scrollbar...

Thank you all so much for your help!
