Sleep Error

For some reason my computer frooze when I tried to sleep it. I quit all applications as usual before selecting sleep, and for the 2nd time ever. The computer screen went black like it does before it switches the monitor off. However it never switched the monitor off. I had to hold the power button down to shut the computer off (which I have a feeling is really bad for the hard drive).

This is very frustrating because I have to choose between letting my computer stay in between sleep and on. vs. turning my computer off abruptly.

HI,

4/12/10 10:06:47 PM com.apple.SystemStarter22 /Library/StartupItems/HP

If you haven't checked, open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items. If you have any apps listed there to launch when you boot your iMac, delete them.

Another place to look is /Library/Startup Items

If startup items aren't causing the glitch then try Resetting the PRAM

Running the Apple Hardware Test might be a good idea too.

I made the decision to risk losing data by turning off the computer with the button for the 3rd time. I checked Macintosh HD with disk utility and its telling me I need to start the computer with the installation disk and repair the drive. I just repaired the drive yesterday. Im assuming that this is going to become routine.

I do not understand why this is happening. But this needs to stop immediately before any further damage to my computer is done. I worked very hard to pay for this and the data on the computer to have it damaged this way. I will be calling apple tomorrow.

Sorry, but hibernatemode 0 is not the problem. I have been running in this mode ever since I bought this Mac.

Installing v1 of the comboupdate in safe mode also did not solve the problem. I will attempt this again with v1.1, but I am going on record now in predicting that this will NOT solve the problem.

Apple made significant changes to sleep behavior in 10.6.3. I highly doubt that this is an installation issue.

Once again, Apple refuses to acknowledge a problem with a new revision. 10.5.6 refused to sleep, the opposite of this problem. It took them months before they admitted to a firmware incompatibility with certain Macbook Pros. I expect the same from them this time around.

I think I may know whats causing this. It seems that im unable to sleep my computer after using my HP C5500 scanner. I used it rarely today, and my computer decided to rarely not sleep. I believe this is the problem. Because I just started sleeping my computer a month ago. And just started scanning again a few weeks ago. I also reset the SMC aswell.

Is there something I can do to maybe fix it, if its the printer?

This is what gave me the idea:

Congratulations on solving your problem.

I have two suggestions:

1) Check with HP for a software update.

2) Use the Activity Monitor utility to identify that guilty process and kill it after you're done scanning.

There is a lot listed in activity monitor. Any idea how I could narrow the search down?

Nothing guaranteed. I have one suggestion might cause the list to become larger: Set the drop-down list at the top of the Activity Monitor to "All Processes". Then search for something that mentions HP and/or scanning. You might also look in the "Login Items" tab of the Accounts panel of System Preferences for anything from HP.

I'm having exactly the same issue with my white macbook. After updating to 10.6.3 when I close the lid of the computer the display turns off but the little light doesn't 'breath' like when it's asleep it stays on. When I open the computer the display turns on as normal, but without a mouse cursor and it won;t respond to anything! So to get it to work I have to hard restart.

I updated with software update first, then tried the combo update. When I did the combo update I got and error message about something in Library/GUID............ But the install was success, also constantly repairing my permissions and verifying my disc. I do have 10.6.2 time machine backups but don't really want to do that unless in necessary.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Same problem here. I just updated to 10.6.3 now 50% of the time after the MacBook Pro comes out of sleep the keyboard and mouse are frozen. There is no choice but to make a hard reboot. Before 10.6.3 I never had any problems with sleep, there is definitely a problem in the new update. Maybe they've been spending too much time on the iPad / iPhone and leaving us poor MacBook Pro users behind.

APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS IT IS A SERIOUS PAIN!!!!!!

The only way to make the computer usable is to not use sleep, meaning shutting down the computer everytime I want to move.
