The new MacBook Pro & plug-ins

Just passing this along....

The new MacBook Pro's are out...

Curious if anyone has any guesses how many more plug-ins we can use with the core i-7 v i-5?

MBP (early 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Yep. I don't know if he's out of the loop on that specific detail or if he's trying to be cryptic. I have a hard time having much faith in his statements since he said that Logic wouldn't go 64 bit any time soon, and then just weeks later did exactly that.

I know what you mean. He's a... bit of a character, though means well.
Having said that, I can see corporate reasons on the 64-bit thing that he wouldn't be able to put out a sniff of the possibility. It's cool he manages to post at all, but is very limited on how much real info he can say.

It's definitely more than just faster redraws, audio benchmarks show much better performance for plugins on machines with HT (close to the performance of that many real processors), and Activity Monitor shows heavy use on the HT cores as well as the full cores.

Of course, there is other stuff going on - Logic is using all kinds of Apple frameworks, and it could be that a lot of those do indeed use and benefit from hyperthreading. It could also be that there are optimisations that benefit from it as well - of course, no one's really in a position to know except Apple.

If you say there are definite, tangible performance improvements from HT, that I'm certainly not going to argue the point, as I have no facts to back it up, and nor have I researched it.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the idea until you have tested it on a machine with HT hardware.

Indeed - I never come to a conclusion without being well-informed first... so I haven't dismissed anything.
