Keep losing internet connection

I have a 27 inch iMac that I bought just after they came out. I will be connected to the internet just fine and then all of sudden I lose internet connectivity. I got up and click the airport icon and it doesn't list any networks. If I restart my computer I can connect again for a day or two before this happens again.

Hi Rockeeee, I FINALLY found a solution, at least to my problem, it might help you as well.

To summarize my problem: I purchased a Mbp 5 weeks ago in San Diego and brought it back with me to Prague (Czech). I constantly had problems with internet connections, specifically Apple products: Safari would only load some sites and even the same site (apple discussions for example) would load sometimes, App store would only load some of the app images and sometimes not connect at all, itunes radio also would only load some of the channels properly and it would only connect to play a radio station about 30% of the time. And yet chrome seemed to always work so I knew the internet connection was ok (very frustrating!!).

After many hours searching the internet and 3 calls/chats with apple to no avail I found something that worked!

Here is the link: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5196379?answerId=22579571022#22579571022

see Carolyn's answer. Specifically the dns entry. I applied the changes and tried itunes radio, immediately all the stations just appeared (icons loaded as they should, before it always seemed to "struggle" to load the images if it did at all) I clicked play and immediately it started playing (struggled to connect before). now everything "just works"! :-)

I hope this helps!

Ok after hours on the net and pulling my hair out i did 4 things. After connecting my imac to new router every 10 mins the connection dropped even though I was still connected to the router. I had to turn wifi off on the imac and back on again to get connection back.

1. Power saver. Put everything to never turn off.

2. Screensaver turned off.

3. Network. Deleted old routers so the only one in there is my new one, which was 3rd down the list even though I had dragged it to the top yesterday but after restart it went to 3rd again.

4. Turned off every wifi device in the house, turned off my imac, restarted router, turned my imac back on first.

It has been 20 mins and so far all ok, fingers crossed. But I have not restarted my imac yet which I am nervous to do !

Josh!

I actually did try what you said, but, it didn't work for me. I'm glad it's working for you 🙂

As it turns out, my router was the problem. It was almost 10 years old.

The iPad, iPod, (other devices) have different antennas so they can keep the wifi signal without a problem.

It is different with the iMac.

The fix was purchasing a new Airport Express 🙂. I'm very happy with it!

It allows me to have my iMac wired, while my iPod, iPad, and Macbook use the WiFi signal. Of course, I can run the iMac wirelessly if I want, but I do get a bit more speed wired.

Thank you Josh, and also, KBTenerife, for jumping in with solutions that worked for you!

I spoke to soon no it has not worked. But glad you have sorted your problem Rockeee, well done.

I have a new vodafone router. NOW the imac and ipad are connected and seem to be fine, I put the wifi address's of both in the add mac address in wfifi settings on router.

But now EVERYTHING else will not even connect to the router, my sons pc, mobile phones, my little pc laptop. What is going on lol

I have a vofafone engineer coming at some point today. Lets see !

I will ask him if he can configure my previous Netgear router to vodafone settings as I never had any prob with this. Am sure the router is the problem.

KBTenerife, thanks.

Now I have a question for you: When you say the wifi addresses of both in the "add MAC address in wifi settings", I have a feeling that that may be the problem.

When you launch your Routers Utility, do you get a window that asks you to create a new Base Station Name?

(plus password?)

in Wireless Mode...do you have the option to create a wireless network?

Then, name that network?

Then, choose a type of security? For ex. WPA2 Personal

Then, Wireless Password?

...

I have a feeling the MAC address you're talking about is "Media Access Control address".

I hope you get it sorted out. Post back and let me know what the Vodafone Engineer figured out. I'm curious and hoping it's sorted for you soon. Good luck!

Hi DamenS,

Noted you problems with WiFi Dropping out. I never had that problem and only recently am experiencing it on my IMAC only. I seem to have my WIFI drop out. I have a wireless setup with my office computer and has been running with no problems, only Recently' and only on my IMAC.

Also, I lose connection with Itunes, but only on my Imac. The mac Book Pro is OK. Both my IMAC & Mac Book Pro use 10.6.8 & Itunes 11.1.5(5)! I have no problems accessing the internet on any of my computer using the wireless WiFi router.

Was your issue resolved.
