Screen Burn-In

I would like to run a clock program 24/7 on my iPad but I am concerned about screen burn-in. There are a number of areas on this clock that do not change positions and I am concerned they may cause permanent burn-in. I can find opinions and guesses but I would like to know if anyone has ever run across anything official from Apple addressing this. Opinions range from "never happen" to "yes but it'll go away eventually". I would love to hear something official. Thanks!

I love these users who scold for certain discussions on this forum. The Forum Police! It's true that Apple does not answer anything here, but I bet that they're listening in! The LED screen of the iPad will not suffer from burn in. Plasma and CRT's only on that one. However, there is, like all things, a life expectancy in LED's so leaving your iPad on all the time will affect that life expectancy, I expect. Sorry. For the pun, I mean. I too laughed at that "expensive clock" crack!

Don't make more of that than it is. Yes, some Apple employees, on their own time, browse and post here. If they choose to be identified as Apple employees, they'll have an Apple logo instead of one of the usual avatars.

The only Apple employees that monitor here as part of their jobs are the Hosts, always identified with the Apple logo. They do not monitor for technical content; only rants, flames, speculation, or illegalities (like advice on how to rip a protected DVD). They may delete or edit posts, but almost never post in the usual forums (I don't recall ever seeing one), aside from the +Discussions Feedback+ forum, at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1076 or other specialized places.

So, unless you see an actual Apple logo, don't believe those who may claim to be Apple employees.

Not here. Why would they pay, when they've got us volunteers doing it for free 🙂 ?

See: http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa#discuss and http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa#personnel

Also... Is it possible that Apple would ask its people to avoid confrontation and to insist that they are not from Apple to avoid recrimination?

They don't need to. If you want to talk to Apple, they have several ways you can do that. Call AppleCare, visit an Apple Store, or, if it's something about these forums, they'll usually answer in the +Feedback Forum+ at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1076

This is why I am confused. I have two answers so far and one says yes the other says no - not permanent. Thank you for letting me know that Apple does not respond to these questions. I was under the impression that because it is a support link that they monitored this discussion. Guess that I would have been waiting for a while:). My GUESS is that "temporary burn-in" is correct and the WIKI is outdated or incorrect but I really hate to guess....

Thanks guys.

Thanks all. I did read somewhere someone telling another "don't worry about it. In a couple of years it will be outdated anyway and you will be getting something new.". Very true.... I've decided to not worry about it and just let the chips fall where they may. The WIKI link above concerned me some but but I will choose to ignore it. Once again thanks to you all and I will consider my question as answered. Happy iPadding.....

Actually, Apple does respond on the forums. I'm a technician (not an actual employee) tasked with responding to various posts of interest. There are close to 100 employees that are actively involved on a daily basis.

In regards to your question, the LED backlit display is less vulnerable to burn in because of the reduction in heat LEDs produce as compared to CCFL backlit displays. However, it is still possible to experience the issue with 2+ hours of sustained image production. It will start then as a ghost image (temporary) and then turn into burn-in (permanent) if it continues for long periods of time.

Thank you VERY much for taking the time to respond. I started out many years ago on the TI99-4A so you can probably tell why screen burn-in is a concern for me. This used to be a major problem and I've just always assumed that safer is better than sorry. I got the idea of the clock because this thing is going to WORK for the $600 that I shelled out for it. Now I know that this may not be a great idea. I'll come up with another idea to get this thing to earn its keep. BTW.... This is a GREAT product! It's amazing as to just how far this technology has evolved. Thanks again for the professional insight.

Now we know that they do monitor these posts. I would have guessed that they did even if it was only Apple employees checking things out for their own personal use. I'm sure that most of them have a number of Apple toys so why would they not be interested.

I would just like to send my "thank you!" to those Apple employees willing to offer their expertise on these forums. What you have to offer is priceless.

Both seem not only possible but highly likely to me..... but what do I know?

This topic - far removed from the original BTW - seems to be drawing a lot if interest. May I suggest that one of you start a new thread possibly labeling it "Does Apple monitor these posts?". It would be nice if someone concerned about their iPad screen could look at this topic and find some actual information.

Thanks for the link:

Quote:
Run the screen with a single solid color or bright white for an extended period of time. This will cause all of the crystals to be reset at a single color setting and should erase any previous image persistence.

This was what Apple recommended for their 23" ACD, when there was a image persistance problem. However, the article is now removed, because 23" ACD has been discontinued.

Apple employees use several methods, officially and unofficially, to receive unsolicited and unedited customer feedback. Unfortunately, identifying themselves as an Apple employee can lead to a couple problems. First, very few Apple employees have the authorization to speak for Apple. A stated opinion becomes "fact", and the internet will run wild. Second, if a self-identified Apple employee does not immediately respond to a question, an annoyed user can publicly ridicule the employee and the company.
